Camino Invites You In For A Bay Dinner & Discussion

Our friends at Camino will be hosting an informational benefit dinner to promote awareness of the Chesapeake Clean Water Act in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. There will be information, and CBF representatives to answer any questions. The CCWA will be voted on later this month.

We will have two seatings on Tuesday, March 9th. One from 5:30-6:30, and the second 8:00-9:00. There is room for about 40 people at each seating.

The menu will feature sea/bay food that is affected by by the water that runs into our streams and rivers to the Bay. The menu is being fine tuned as we speak, and will feature such tasty items as Rappahannock River Oysters, Bay Scallops, Hog Island Clams, Wild Stripe Bass, and Poached Flounder with Blue Crab.
Come enjoy a great meal, and find out what you can do to help promote clean soil, water, and food.

Reservations are required, 434-293-2323.  [Info]

Wise Energy For Virginia Shines The Spotlight On True Coal Costs

Coal_Country-Poster

A local conservation group is hosting the Charlottesville premiere next week of Coal Country, an award-winning documentary about the true cost of America’s “cheap” electricity. The film focuses on mountaintop removal coal mining, where the tops of ancient mountains are blown off to expose coal seams, and the rock and dirt dumped in valleys, obliterating headwater streams.  In the film, we hear from activists who are fighting to stop this controversial practice, which is devastating water quality, forests and communities in the region, and from coal miners and officials who are fighting for their jobs and way of life.

Movie times are 7 p.m. next Wednesday and Thursday (Dec 9 & 10) at Vinegar Hill Theater.  There is also a reception on December 10 at 5 p.m. at Siips Wine Bar on the downtown mall. All proceeds from the movie and reception will benefit the Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition.  The Coalition and its partners are working to stop new coal plants in Virginia, halt the destructive practice of mountaintop removal mining, and shift the Commonwealth toward a clean energy future.

“My hope is this superb documentary will shock Americans and create a surge of urgency that stops the atrocity of mountain top removal coal mining immediately,” said actress Ashley Judd in endorsing the film.

Camino Gets Messy, Brings Food Fight To Town

Our favorite recent edition to the downtown mall, Camino Restaurant, is perfectly situated to play host for Vinegar Hill, and that is exactly what one of the owners is planning.  Sean Thomas has more than a passing interest in the local & sustainable farming movement, and he opened his doors for an early tasting event after the screening of Fresh!, a film focusing on the reinvention of our food system, in July.

The Mediterranean bistro will be continuing this trend, as Sean has invited the director of Food Fight, Chris Taylor, to town for a screening.  With the holiday & then Oscar season firing up, it may be a short wait before Vinegar Hill can schedule a slot.

We will keep you posted as we learn more.

Charlottesville Veg Fest + Puppies & Cats

CVille-Veg-Fest

The 13th annual CVF is kicking off this Saturday, September 26th @ Lee Park, from 11AM-4:00PM.  The event is a showcase for the lifestyles of the healthy and sustainable amongst us.  Specifically highlighting vegan food samples from various local restaurants and stores, roughly 100 exhibitors/vendors will be in attendance providing information and options for a wide range of humanitarian causes.

There will also be an adoption fair for dogs & cats, a silent auction, and the Richmond Vegetarian Festival will be attending.  I’m a little confused on that last one, but apparently ours is way mo’ better then theirs.  Charlottesville +1.  [Info]

Anyone attended in years past, or planning on going this year?

Green Takes Back The Streets – Kinda Sorta

National PARK(ing) Day just finished up for 2009, in front of Blue Moon Diner on West Main Street.  This is an event started in San Fransisco which has recently gained nationwide attention.  They reclaimed three parking spaces from the inevitable pavement march, for just 5 short hours, and converted them back into the greenery which once stood there.  Or at least that was the national idea.  Charlottesville instead made it into a living room/jam area.  Our local anti-parking instigator was unavailable for comment, but we managed to snap a few pics.  Anyone get the chance to check it out?  We would have to say it looks more like a yard sale then a green movement.
