First it was the banning of coats and ties (not really, but Sea of Orange killed coats, ties and sundresses), then the killing of the pep band, and now it’s the banning of signs from UVa sports games. In an email sent to UVa students, the move is “intended to support and promote sportsmanship and positive game day environment for all fans in attendance at athletic events.”
I guess I can see the reason for this, but at the same time, isn’t there a lot of verbal unsportsmanlike like conduct that happens at athletic events? I guess, it’s more for the appearance of a proper sports game, but, if it were proper, wouldn’t we all be wearing coats, ties and sundresses anyway?
Charlottesville Tomorrow reports that the Board of Architectural Review decided to go with the larger 4×12 bricks, matching the original design from Lawrence Halprin. But, the problem is this; this bricks are set in sand, instead of morter, meaning potential for heel hell.
No word on who gets to keep the old bricks, but I’m sure the brick replacement will be a nightmare and end a year later than expected. First problem? It’s hard to find who makes these special sized bricks.
On June 30th, 2008, Dave Matthews Band’s saxophonist, LeRoi Moore got into an ATV accident that sent him to the University of Virginia hospital. He had left the hospital, only to return a few days later. His condition was not good and word was that things weren’t going well.
We do not know the details, but have verified from two independent sources that this is in fact true. I talked with Bruce Flohr, who confirmed his death several moments ago.
LeRoi, rest in peace and in your and Dave Matthews Band honor we won’t write anything on the site for tomorrow. LeRoi died at the young age of 46.
What happened? UVA Men’s basketball coach Dave Leitao announced yesterday that Tunji Soroye would be receiving a scholarship and Mikalauskas would not be returning to the program for failing to live up to the program’s standards (on virginiasports.com, dailyprogress.com, and nbc29.com). No other elaboration. TheSabre is abuzz; allegedly Lars’ grades are fine; any of you birdies hear anyhing?
Is it the time when Coran Capshaw will sell off the restaurant business? Our birdie thinks so…
Is the restaurant group up for grabs? I heard something…
His restaurants include: Blue Light Grill, Enoteca, Mas, Mono Loco, Ten and Three Notch’d. T’would make sense considering the expansion into music mogulhood.
Hello everyone, I think you probably read the article in the latest cover story in the C-VILLE titled “Is this the new face of evil? With cVillain.com, owner Kyle Redinger is either trashing old media or reigniting it. You decide.”
It’s exciting to get on the cover of a newspaper like this and I’m thankful to Cathy, Scott and Bill and all the other folks that were involved in the production of this article. I wanted to make a couple of points about the article and answer any questions anyone may have.
We love Spicy Bear. There are so many people involved, I can’t even begin to thank everyone, but everyone deserves a pat on the back. All of our sites take a lot of involvement from “editors,” from writers, from commenters and from readers. I wish the article had emphasized more about the community, because it’s not like we are building this thing in a vacuum.
I do not think that newspapers and other traditional media are going to die, nor do I trash traditional journalism. The in-depth journalism and reporting will always be a cornerstone of media. The internet is changing things really quickly, but I don’t look down on old media. I do believe they need to undergo dramatic change to appeal to a more open, socially driven space.
I was told the headline was going to be “King of New Media” or something along those lines, so the headline was a little surprising to me. Nonetheless, it was pretty fun to do that shot and, trust me, it’s hard to keep a straight face when you have a 6 inch flame in your face. Jackson Smith did the shots.
Tom Daly actually took our shot for Business Week.
I also wish the article had mentioned Francesco a little bit more, because he is my business partner and every bit as instrumental in thinking about business stuff as I am.
I don’t think I’m evil.
Remember if you are unhappy with the site, you are invited to participate however you want.
Any more questions? If you ask them in the comments I will happily answer them during the day.

It appears as a potentially deadly situation was resolved without incident in Roanoke, Virginia. A region-wide airplane chase was led by a man who wanted to crash a stolen Cessna 172 plane (pictured above) into Smith Mountain Lake. The plane was stolen this morning before 11AM from the Roanoke Regional Airport. Evacuations had occurred at Bridgewater Plaza and it sounds like the region was in quite a stir. The man landed the plane and was chased down by the FBI. I thought they shot down planes that were out of control?
The suicidal, runaway pilot did not get approval from air traffic control. The chase occurred all over South West Virginia. We put together a map of the points of sighting and interpolated a flight area of the plane. Thank goodness no one got hurt.
I accidentally read the cover of the Daily Progress this weekend and discovered an article about “Prayer at the Pump,” a Christian movement seeking God’s help in lowering gas prices. Maybe it’s one of those things where the people don’t realize that gasoline prices are driven by how much we consume. Anyway, now that this made the front page of the DP, we want to solicit prayer topics for things that are entirely in our control/ridiculous. Maybe we too can make the front page…
Our list of prayer items for Charlottesville:
Lower prices on mixed drinks
$2 beer comes back to South Street all night on Tuesday
That we never get hangovers, even when drinking excessively
Bringing OXO back
Friday’s after 5 starts offering beer for $1
That we had access to King George’s entire wardrobe
That more of you would write articles! (snark)
Our next prayer session will occur on Tuesday night at South Street. Any other prayer ideas?
While many companies around the world are hard at work on this technology, UVa is trying to prove the feasibility of mass production and its positive (hopefully) effects on the environment.
