While not a dish per-se, this member of the wild cabbage food group is one of the tastiest sides at Maya and leaves nothing to be desired. Roasted brussel sprouts are a joy to eat, but have a much hated stigma behind them. I am sure we all had our fair share of nasty brussel sprouts at one point in our childhood that scarred us for life. SFist, our long lost west coast relative wrote about these devilish sprouts as well:
If you don’t like Brussels sprouts, you’re probably turned off by the bitterness, which is never popular with Western palates. There’s no easy way around it: Brussels sprouts are often bitter. As Harold McGee says in On Food and Cooking, “whether we cook sprouts rapidly to minimize the production of thiocyanates, or slowly to transform all of the glucosinolates, the result is still bitter.” Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Thiocyanates are tricky little devils.
McGee offers one strategy for taming the bitterness: Slice the sprouts in half and cook them in a lot of boiling water. The water leaches the offending compounds out of the center stem of the vegetable, where they tend to congregate. Alice Waters suggests a more time-consuming approach: Cut out the stalk’s core before cooking the sprouts.
Unfortunately our parents must have over cooked them releasing these delicious sulfur smelling/tasting compounds.

After a wonderful week if internally celebrating in our heads, we can finally put all that pent up sexual energy to use, its Friday after all. So here, we go…
Friday
- Drink wine for charity: well sort of…drink 5 wines at 5PM for $5 at Whole Foods this afternoon to benefit the C’VILLE BIKE MENTORS, a group of “expert” riders that educate us lame car driving folk how to bike better and ultimately save the world.
- Checkout cvilleMuse for info on gallery exhibits and a movie about our favorite Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers (AKA CLAW)
- Girls in short shorts: UVa volleyball plays UNC tonight. This ain’t your high school gym class style of playing. If you have never been to a real volley ball game you should
- X-Lounge: live music and dinner bail out (one small and one big plate for $21, tues-sat 530-8pm)
Saturday (after the jump)

Criminal masterminds (or loser assholes) have stolen two laptops from a Tonsler Park building containing names, addresses, date of birth and DMV customer number for every registered voter in the city of Charlottesville. Luckily for us, that information is encrypted, but now that it’s public knowledge, don’t you think the thieves will find some smart hackers to de-encrypt our information?
Way to go, Charlottesville.

Tomorrow night…The Garage Goes Dressy!
This Friday from 6-8pm there will be an unveiling of a giant dressy outfit created specifically for the Garage, downtown’s newest artspace/concert venue. Local artist and curator of the Garage, Kate Daughdrill, has created a 21 by 12 foot outfit to cover the entire exterior of the Garage. The dressy outfit is a form-fitting, vintage piece that falls somewhere between business casual and formal. Come in your dressy outfit so you don’t feel out of place!
After the First Fridays opening, Dusty Brown (NYC) and Joe Pollock (Cville) will be playing solo shows starting at 8:00pm. It should be a very special, intimate night with these two amazing musicians!

From a birdie…
Oakencroft Vineyard and Winery isn’t actually closing. Well, Oakencroft is, but the new owners will keep making the wine, & are just going to be closed long enough (like a month or something) so that when they reopen people don’t think it’s Oakencroft anymore.
So, we’re not losing our 3-miles-from-Charlottesville winery for long.

From the City… The City of Charlottesville sadly announced today that Mayor Dave Norris has conceded defeat in a challenge with Falls Church, VA to surpass the City in the percentage of registered voters participating in yesterday’s Presidential Election. Mayor Robin Gardner of Falls Church accepted a formal challenge by Charlottesville Mayor Dave Norris to compete for the highest voter turnout earlier last month. In a move to bolster its ranks, Charlottesville began the 2008 Get Out the Vote Drive to promote voter registration, civic engagement, public education, and ease of voting to all City residents. Since 2004 the City has added nearly 9,000 registered voters to the books with more still being added by the Office of the Registrar. Norris picked Falls Church as the best challenge because the city had the largest voter turnout of any city in Virginia with an impressive 81 percent of registered voters casting a ballot. In 2004 the Charlottesville rate was less than the 71 percent statewide average. To raise the stakes, the City of Charlottesville waged a souvenir bust of Thomas Jefferson from Monticello while Falls Church offered a sapling of its 2008 Tree of the Year, the sassafras.
