Albemarle County Crime Analysis

For those of you who dont think mapping out the addresses of convicted sex offenders in your area is enough ( http://sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov/sor/ <- for those of you who haven’t already ) I present you with crime analysis of Albemarle County based on the 500 (reported) crimes committed between January 1st and May 11th.

The vast majority of these crimes were theft crimes, making any analysis of the types of crimes committed pretty irrelevant. The focus here is location. Find yourself … or, find your crime if you are a villain in every sense of the word.

I hope this has helped cure the insomnia of the worried… Unless you live on East Rio road in which case you should probably move… Enjoy

Interview with the Villains of Charlottesville’s Real Estate Bubble Blog

If you haven’t heard of the Bubble Blog, it’s the antithesis of the Charlottesville Real Estate Media machine.  The people who run it are anonymous from what I can tell.  As fellow Villains, we were immediately attracted to their mission “for bemusement purposes only, it’s a small contribution to the zeitgeist.” We discovered many things which are well worth the read.  Between real estate agent denial, BULLMONT, it NOT being a great time to buy for 99.9999% of the population, I am very excited to share this amazing interview with you.

We put on the masks and met in a secret lair. I cannot tell you details about the Bubble people behind the mask, but I can share with you the responses which may outsnark some of our very own Villains.  The questions are below:

  1. When the Charlottesville housing bubble bursts, will we be wet, slimy or greasy?
  2. Why do realtors lie about housing in Charlottesville being HOT right now? In my neighborhood, prices have come down over 15%. How is that hot?
  3.  When our homes fall into the giant hole in the economy, what are your survival tips? How many guns do you own?
  4.  Are you smarter than Jim Duncan? Are you Jim Duncan’s Nemesis
  5. What’s the most ridiculously priced house and/or neighborhood in Charlottesville right now? What’s the best deal?
  6. Anything else you want to say to our readers?

Get ready for the responses, this one is a doozy.

Free Lightbulbs

CFL

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, Albemarle County is giving away free compact florescent lightbulbs.  For free.  As in, if you’re a cVillain by heart, but not home, and live in that dreaded County of Albemarle, you can go pick up a free bulb at the county office building.

First come, first lit.  Get on it.

Must Have Dish Of The Month: Mono Loco’s Grilled Corn

It is a rare occasion that a dish in cville almost succeeds in bringing me “back” to a country I have visited, and surprisingly I can thank Mono Loco this month for making it happen. Not too hungry the other night, but accompanying a friend of mine for dinner, I decided on trying the grilled corn appetizer, a new item (at least since the last time we let crazy monkeys cook for us) on the Mono Loco menu.

Sportsplex, No Soup For You

In what was described as an “ambush,” the Albemarle County Planning commission decided that the proposed sportsplex wouldn’t fly.

What is this so-called sportsplex?

Developer Mike Harding wants to build a 94,000 sq ft sports facility on the intersection of 64 and 29. It would house 4 soccer fields, 4 basketball courts, a restaurant and a workout facility. That’s pretty big.

If ACAC isn’t freaking out, between this and the City planned workout facility, then Mr. Harding is. Jeremy Borden from the Daily Progress reports:

“This is an ambush,” [Mr. Harding] said. “This is not a work session.” Harding said that he could accomplish the plan under existing zoning, which would mean the county would not be given acres of land that will complete area hiking trails. Harding said if he were to move the project 75 feet, he would not have a problem with rural area zoning.

“All of a sudden I’m violating rural character,” Harding said. “Let’s get real about this.”

Oh boy oh boy. So does a big facility like this (at the intersection of 250 and 64) destroy the ruralness of Albemarle County? What do you think?

Worn Out Bridges: Should Drivers Be Scared?

[written by colfer as a comment]

County bridges are easy to search on the national Bridge Inventory (NBI). The city bridges are not.

Here’s a really bad one that if I recall The Hook or C-Ville missed in its recent story:

Introduction

Riding down by the auto parts store in Waybo, with a skinny girl in a big Rita Heyworth bullet bra riding shotgun… but I digress. If you’re going to write about Waynesboro being a different world while not coming off as a snob, you’re still being a snob– unless you mention the lesbian in the waiting room.
