Try and Make: Charlottesville’s Newest Arts Collective & Experiment

collaborative art charlottesville

Try & Make is a new non-profit exhibition venue, art collective, and publishing outfit located near downtown Charlottesville. We are looking to create a space that will be both specific to the local arts community here in town, while also interacting with and participating in a greater artistic discourse at large. We are trying to generate a creative outlet for people who either may not have the resources to obtain an audience for their work, or who feel that existing institutional frames of distribution don’t really suit the work they are making. We hope to do this by making our own breathing, growing headquarters with open doors, easy communication, and big experiments.

Charlottesville Art Auction

art auction

Charlottesville’s Art in Action, An Afternoon of Art and Advocacy on the Lawn, will be held Sunday, April 5, 2009, from 1-4pm on the South Lawn at U.Va. The purpose of the event is to celebrate and honor the efforts of Charlottesville organizations by using art to bring the University and Charlottesville communities together.

We are currently requesting donations of original art of any size or form that reflect the efforts of one of these seven organizations: Albemarle Housing Improvement Program, Alliance for Community Choice and Transportation, Charlottesville Community Scholarship Program, Charlottesville Emergency Food Bank, Community Bikes, Shelter for Help and Emergency, or the Music Resource Center. The art will be auctioned off to benefit the organization they represent.

Please submit a paragraph describing the thematic connection to one of these organization by Friday, March 20, 2009, with a short description of your art piece(s), dimensions of the work(s), and any additional display requirements to Vinu Ilakkuvan at ivinu@virginia.edu.

The art pieces themselves can be turned into 36 East Lawn on the Wednesday prior to the event, April 1st, from 6:15pm to midnight.

The success of this event depends on art submissions, and we would greatly appreciate your contribution!

Art Lattes in Charlottesville?

Does anyone make Latte art in Charlottesville? Please tell me yes. I think the sad truth is no.

Weekend Preview 5/2/2008 to 5/4/2008

This weekend is going to rock the shazbot… why?

Music

Um, I can never beat Shaun to the punch.  You are going to miss a lot of sweet stuff if you don’t read his preview over at cvilleMUSE.  How do you like these apples? Van Halen (please don’t be canceled), Ryan Shaw, Birdlips and Friday’s After Five (with Eli Cook).

First Friday’s

How could you overlook Pinkie’s amazing preview on cvilleMUSE. She covers every single venue and every single artist, with links to boot!  Apparently, there will be MUSE special ops walking around handing out business cards.  Try to find them and tell them Thor sent you.

Off the Cusp

If MUSE always kicks my butt on real events at least I can find stuff off the beaten track. If you are a techno-mac-loving-uber-nerd, you should go to BeCamp, which is a part communist, part hippy part electronic festival of computers and crazy ideas like “FOAF,” “Grails,” “Parallel Computing,” “Selenium -web tier testing” and a bunch of other things that scare me.

Enjoy your weekends! What did we miss?

The Week in Review: 1/21/2008 to 1/27/2008

Besides the lovely complexity of having too much wine this week, we break the story on Pink Paintballs, (hopefully) find a restaurantuer a chef partner, chat with bartenders and break a rumor of a high end steak place. Oh, we also make some rule.

The week in review continues below:

The Week in Review 1/14/2008 – 1/20/2008

As typical for a cVillain week, things got rather spicy. Last week was about banning things (trans fat, bumper nuts and bags) before Armageddon hit. Between our new mascot and the discussion about platonic boy/girl friendships, it was one of our most diverse weeks yet.
