It is a rare occasion that a dish in cville almost succeeds in bringing me “back” to a country I have visited, and surprisingly I can thank Mono Loco this month for making it happen. Not too hungry the other night, but accompanying a friend of mine for dinner, I decided on trying the grilled corn appetizer, a new item (at least since the last time we let crazy monkeys cook for us) on the Mono Loco menu.

Like, OMG, it’s so important that a restaurant bans smoking that it makes it on TV. That’s pretty cool.
The banning will happen on June 1st, according to the McGrady’s website.
I love the patio and the uber-cheap drink specials, but …can we get a ban on the bad food, too?
In case anyone was wondering, happy hour specials after the break…

This Tuesday was slightly out of the norm. We began at Bang. It was chock full of what appeared to be UVA students. For a Tuesday night the place was packed. This seemed a bit odd to me. We certainly are fans of the Bang atmosphere and it was in full swing last night.
Next in the line up was South Street. South Street was dead. We saw none of our fellow villains
The place was so lame we left after five minutes. What was the deal guys?!
The last stop of the evening was Mas. Mas was not its usual sardine set-up. Despite the lack of a crowd all the tables, a chunk of the outdoor seating and a good portion of the bar were full. Mas seemed to have an usually large number of UVA students as well.
In general the town seemed to be bustling but other than Bang no place really seemed to show signs of it.
What was with the UVA infiltration last night? Aren’t they supposed to be out enjoying their summer fun?

Which Charlottesville Bar Has the Hottest Bartenders?

Wow, what a night. I hadn’t seen this many people on the mall in forever. Everyone came out of hibernation yesterday. The tough part was finding a nice place to be outside with the sea of people that came downtown.
Ventana (new place in place of Kiki) was full of Law and Darden students wearing sun dresses. I didn’t go in, but it looks like it was pretty exciting. While we have ripped on Splendora’s in the past (see The Great Cookie Roundup, one of my favorite articles, or Inside Scoop in Gelato), I did have the pleasure to try the gelato again. Spendora’s has gotten way better and I will write a new review.
Ten, as usual, was full of hot Dardenites and L1s, 2s, and 3s. Yummy. I also had the pleasure of walking by OXO which looked semi-bondage to me. I think OXO kicked ass on the interest level; everyone I talked to was aware of the party and their curiosity was there. But, the problem was no one wanted to go; perhaps it was the $15 cover, or the fear of leather. I don’t know. Did you go? We should have some pictures coming soon.

A little birdie who recently moved to Fredericksburg reports:
Last night I was talking with some local restaurateurs, and found out that a local business owner, Chris Dunbar, has bought Starr Hill. It will be a restaurant and music hall. They already have a show booked (dark star orchestra) and should be opening by midsummer.

Is tonight closing night for Orbit? Still waiting for details… (and skeptical given April Fool’s jokes).
Update:
OK just found out they aren’t opening tonight. And they are for sure CLOSED!
It has been sold. To who I don’t know nor do I know any more details right now

Earlier this week, a little birdie told me of the best bad pick-up line she’d heard. To wit:
“Baby, you smell like Rose’s…the store, not the flowers.”
Of course, I would never stoop to denigrate a retail chain doing business locally, not least a chain that offers an embarrassment of riches in the category of fantastic White Elephant gifts and other discounted wares. (Huzzah Rose’s! Go you! Please don’t sue!)
But this birdie’s pick-up line does reel the mind. What is the worst pick-up line you’ve heard, ‘Villains? And, failing that, (and I’m looking at you, mc, b-yo, ThatGrrl, and oy here) what’s the worst pick-up line you can come up with?
It’s Friday, and it’s the first weekend in Spring. Fertility is thick on the ground. Let’s do our part to help prevent people from getting laid.

So the C&O crowd made for standing-room-only with a live band and an older crowd, while the young ‘uns at South Street mustered a few pints with many an empty bar seat? What the eff? I’ve heard tell of South Street’s Tuesday draw. What gives?
Generational war? (Fight! Stop spending our Social Security! We need beer money!)
Post-St. Patrick’s Day lull? (Perhaps, but blaming the Irish is like sooooo 1850.)
Slow night in the ‘ville by my account—minus the C&O; I’ve been hearing good things about the live music there. Keep it up! (And no knock on South Street; I blame lily-livered cVillains.)

I had the misfortune of dining at Bohème this past weekend. I know…the location and menu seem inspiring, but it just wasn’t my lucky evening. Our table might have had a clue when we began ordering drinks. Besides a bottle of delicious Spanish red, we asked for sparkling water. I would expect Evian or Pelegrino, but they surprised me with VOSS. For some reason I was under the impression VOSS was some yuppy water from California that drunk celebrities spray on their friends when the Cristal runs dry. Did you know its from Norway? Our waiter did, and we all stared at each other in disbelief…WTF are we doing drinking Norwegian water in cville?
