UrbanCross Takes Over Downtown for a Day of Madness

This past Sunday hundreds of cycling enthusiasts spent their day watching and racing in Charlottesville’s own UrbanCross.  Cyclocross, is a relatively new cycling sport that has gained massive popularity in the states in the past few decades after its birth in Belgium.

UrbanCross at Ix, in it’s third year, is Charlottesville’s urban take on this exciting (and frankly insane) sport.  Located in the vacant lot beside Blue Wheel bike shop off of Elliot Avenue downtown the 1.75 mile track leads brave riders winding up hills and stairs, through sand pits and over barriers all on bicycles.

Several races took place on sunday starting at 9 o’clock with novice riders, until the 2 o’clock elite riders race.  I got to not only watch some of my friends and relatives race but personally take a spin around the track during an intermission, which was like nothing I had ever done (and quite honestly terrifying).

Charlottesville is hosting another cross race on December 6th at Darden Towe Park, those who have not yet experienced this sport are definitely encouraged to stop by for a look at one of the most entertaining sports around.

We’re inviting all of you (who can ride the 31 miles at an easy pace) to join our team.  It costs $100 to signup, and all the money will go to charity.  We’re working on getting everyone on our team tshirts.  To signup, go here and make sure you select “cVillain/Spicy Bear Media” as your affiliation.

Best Bicycle Shop in Charlottesville?

I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike

So I just got a new job that’ll allow me to ride my bicycle to work most days. Just in time for $12/gal gas season, too. I need a bike tune-up pretty badly, but I’ve never been to a bike shop in town.
