How to Start A Local Media Company: Threaten Local Bloggers by Edible Communities, Inc.

I hope you all had time to enjoy edible cville. It’s a relatively new addition to the Charlottesville blog scene, but Libby, a transplant from Pittsburg got to experience all the joy and love threatening and idiocy that the internet has to offer.

You see, apparently by naming a blog “edible cville” you’ve “infringed” a copyright associated with a company that is named “edible communities.”  Now, let’s forget Edible Communities, Inc. has yet to launch a media property in the area and focuses on cities and regions much larger that Charlottesville.  They plan to name their magazine “Edible Blue Ridge,” which is, in fact, a registered trademark.  Neither “edible cville” or “edible charlottesville” showed up as registered trademarks in our searches (although you don’t necessarily need a registered trademark to protect your name).  What we’re saying is this is bullshit. Offer Libby $5,000 for her blog and be done with it. I’ll bet you spent more on the lawyers!

Edible Communities, Inc. sent libby a cease and desist letter, demanding she shut down her blog.  She responded with a great blog post.  She concludes:

At this point, I have no idea what will happen. Maybe I should change the name to “Incredible Edible Cville…” and have the egg people mad at me too. Hell, with this blog entry, I may have just shot myself in the other leg. This is a fork in the road in my new guise as a writer who actually WRITES that my brain hasn’t been able to get around. I’m still reeling something so small and insignificant has garnered so much attention. If it’s one thing I’ve learned so far, it’s that my deepest, most gutteral reaction to bullying isn’t to back down right away. And this is bullying of the highest order make no mistake. No I’m not a back downer. But nor am I a push backer. It’s not in my Buddhist nature to push back. But I will stand my ground.

Libby, even though you had buddhist forsight to predict this ironically, this is nonsense.  Libby, we say bloggers must stand together, so we’ve made a few variations of the word edible and started our own blogs to see how far these lawyers will take this. They are:

If anyone is interseted, the actual trademark is after the break..

Spider On Top of a Frog On Top of a Turtle

Two local bloggers, Darren (the guy who designed cVillain and cvilleMUSE) and Wistar have the coolest picture I’ve ever seen on their blogs.  Is this not the cutest thing?

Apparently they found the frog, spider and turtle in this zen-like, survival state in their swimming pool filter.  Make sure you head over to their sites to read the full story.
