The holiday season brings out many things in local businesses, from preemptive decorations (only days after Halloween nationally, and our city got in early too), to the piped music forced on consumers across town, and finally the familiar ring of Salvation Army bells out front. However, at least two local chains have banned the smiling ringers from their premises, namely some CVS stores & all Harris Teeters in the area. Both businesses have offered press releases, with spokespeople citing “non-solicitation” policies which have been in effect for years, but only now seem to be enforced.
The lack of “Christmas Kettles” has led to a rather significant downturn in local donations, to the tune of $22K, and while we are unsure what percentage of total donations to date that is, or how the economic downturn over last year is impacting donations in general, it certainly is significant for those in need.
Teeter is apparently working on a “Salvation Virtual Donation Kettle” option, while CVS is apparently showing no remorse.
Other local businesses are openly embracing the familiar, with over 120 Kroger locations hosting the red clad do-gooders. The Salvation Army is requesting other business owners to step forward in support, if owners are interested in speaking with a representative their contact information is listed here. Online donations are currently being accepted through their secure website, Salvation Army. [Info] [Photo Credits]

Thank the heavens it isn’t pouring anymore. While last weekend was semi-lame, this weekend we introduce you to many things, from saving 20% at local stores to pub crawls to 2008’s best music. We also have some gift ideas for you, including art that has no status. This is a good preview, let’s rock it…
CLAW will be raising money for SARA (The Sexual Assault Resource Agency) on Tuesday, July 8th, starting at 8PM. It’s getting so big now that you have to have a poster to rally your supporters. Be there or be square.
Here are the photos of our wildly successful space party. Final tallies are still being made, but we raised over $1,000.00 for Computers 4 Kids!
We all had a blast and hope you guys did too! Here are some photos — to help remind you just how much fun you really had. Please send us your photos and we will post them as well.
The expense of the meals is rising at a staggering rate. A few months ago, roughly $5,000 of the program’s $9,500 monthly costs went to food. Now the monthly food costs have increased to $8,500.
“I don’t want to sound desperate, but we’ve got a big problem,” Ford said.
This problem is not only an issue for local charities, our privileged dining habits, or Haitians, but a problem for the whole world. Unlike rising fuel prices, humans (especially the very poor) can’t switch their eating habits to deal with necessary consumption of basic food groups.
To give you an idea of just how bad these rising prices are across all food groups, take a look at the chart.
Oils and Fats and Cereals have nearly tripled since 2000. Now, what can be done about this? I don’t have a good answer, but if you have any ideas or solutions, I’d love to hear them. Informational video after the break.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s here! We have all the details for Space Party 2008. Before we begin, we would like to thank everyone who is involved. Thanks to X-Lounge for hosting the event and doing “special things.” Thanks to Charlottesville Sports and Social Club and 106.1 The Corner for being our media partners. Thanks to Music Today for managing our ticket sales. Thanks to Belmont Yo for doing an amazing job with the artwork! And, thank you to all of you loyal readers and voters for getting excited about giving all of our proceeds to your charity of choice. Without your support we couldn’t do this.
This time around, the details are sweeter, we have T-Shirts and will have more fun. Details after the break…
We had over 2,200 votes in the Choose Your Charity nomination post. That’s amazing! Thank you for visiting our site and voting for your charity. Well, despite the disqualifications, the bickering and the insanity, we have our final contestants:
Relay for Life, American Cancer Society (456 Votes)
Computers4Kids (430 Votes)
Boys & Girls Club (259 Votes)
Congratulations for making it to round #2! The winner of the final voting tally will receive all of the proceeds from the party. Hopefully we can raise more than $2,000 this time because we are partnered with 106.1 The Corner and Charlottesville Sports and Social Club. Now, here is how round two will work:
You can vote online and the voting will be available on this post until Midnight before the final party on May 25th. If you buy a ticket (ticket purchase available soon and at the door) and come to the party, you will be allowed to vote again.
We will count the votes with the following formula: 1x the online poll votes and 25x the party attendee vote.
We will announce the winner at 10:00PM on May 25th.
Do you recall the Alien Space Ship invasion from April 20th? In the name of cVillain, I offered myself to the aliens and have recently returned to earth. While they couldn’t probe me because of my thunder and lightning powers, we did sit down to plan the next party.
I explained that cVillains and 106.1 The Corner had OFFICIALLY raised over $2,100 for the HIV/AIDS Services Group! They decided they wanted to be involved in our next party. While the ideas for an “Illegal Alien” party on Cinco de Maio were quickly shot down due to fears of the Feds and their fallen Area 51 comrades (and some earthly, political correctness issues), we decided we wanted to throw a party in which all aliens were invited.
The details require top secret government clearance, but will soon be released to the public. We are leaking the date of the party: May 25th! Trust us, the party is going to be amazing.
This time, we will let YOU pick the charity and will give all event proceeds to that charity! Initial submissions start now and end on Saturday, May 3rd at Noon. We hope to raise more than $2,100 for the charity of choice.
To the joker who stole from the fundraiser at Mellow Mushroom last night:
I HOPE KARMA GETS YOU BIG TIME
NBC 29 Reports that a guy came up to the table where Relay for Life cups were being sold, pushed one of the girls, grabbed an envelope which contained an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot.
Police said he is a 35 to 50 year old black male… good luck finding someone with that discription.
