In the never ending churn of restaurant and food rumors in Charlottesville, we’ve got a particularly chatty birdie who has sent in enough gossip to fill a 5 days of post. We’ll add a tidbit or two each day this week. Here are your Escafe and Bistro rumor..
Escafe has sold to “Dancing Queen.” He has some nice ideas that we have been trying to implement for years… which will def make escafe a strictly bar scene… bring the food back?

The US women’s eight won a gold medal, the first time since 1984! Lindsay Shoop, who was on the winning team, grew up in Charlottesville and attended UVa. Respect!

Shaun has the scoop on the Red Light’s Preston Avenue music hall..
The Red Light Management proposed plan to open a music hall on Preston Avenue appears to be in doubt following last night’s meeting of the Charlottesville Planning Commission. After a number of community members rose to speak out against the deal and presented the Commission with a petition stating opposition to the proposed venue, Starr Hill Presents, LLC (the group representing Coran Capshaw’s Red Light Management) has decided to withdraw its request for a special use permit…

Just got this very nondescript press release from the city..
Charlottesville Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the 2000 block of Michie Drive at around 11:30 PM last evening.
Two twenty year old black male subjects were the victims of gunfire. Their injuries are not life threatening, and both provided their own transportation to the hospital where police were notified.
Investigators are not releasing any additional information with respect to victim identity or the precise nature of their injuries.
The suspect in this incident has been described as a black male, approximately 5’8” tall and was said to be wearing a white tee shirt. The suspect may have been operating a black 4 door sedan.
This investigation is in the very early stages and is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 977-4000.

A former Charlottesville resident, Lauren Brie who is now is living in Radford has been picked to be part of the cast for America’s Next Top Model Cycle 11. The show starts September 3rd.
She’s 20 years old, but I can’t find out where she went to high school. Anyone know?
Lauren, you are gorgeous, now win it for Charlottesville!

A little birdie lets us know a bartending contest will take place at TGI Friday’s at 7PM tonight. You win by making drinks with the most “flair.” All the proceeds from the contest will be given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. No one from Spicy Bear is going, but if you guys get pictures, please send them in!

Tomorrow C-VILLE will publish its 2008 Best Of Awards for Charlottesville, so I’ve decided to publish our food winners list as well as analyze some of the winners from Daily Progress’s Reader’s Choice (which was published about 3 weeks ago) in one fell swoop. Last year we did our own superlatives which we think are much more accurate (although biased and not democratically chosen). As seems to be the case with any reader driven contest, the larger the place, the larger the voting power of their customer base/employees. Oh well.. that’s why you have snarkers like us. Feel free to critique!

We’ve heard from a reliable birdie that the former Hardware Store location is being converted to an Urban Outfitters. It makes sense given the store’s size and the standard size of U.O. shops.
If you recall, one of our other birdies told us in September that a clothing store was in the mix for a possible lease of the once famous restaurant. This does conflict with the rumor that the X-Lounge people were behind something.
We think this rumor has some wings and it looks like the cat is finally out of the bag. Thank you birdie! I’m sure mall people are not happy about this.

This is the final “Week O’ Charlottesville Lunches” article. I will feature my favorite lunch places around the downtown mall. Monday, we covered Eppie’s, Tuesday, Rev Soup, Wednesday, Feast, Thursday, Bodo’s Bagels, Today, Hamdinger’s!
I looked through our archives for a Hamdingers review, but alas, none could be found. I recall there being at least three street vendors serving variations of hotdogs on the mall a few months back. Only one remains and today, Hamdingers sets up the stand near Central Place across the overpopulated row of pashminas and crap jewelry. Look for a fancy silver cart with a slightly broken umbrella.
