Led Zeppelin to Play at Bonnaroo in 2008?

Capshaw.. PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN, I KNOW YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS. A music nut just sent me this link about Zep playing at Bonnaroo:

Led Zeppelin will reportedly play their first US show in over 30 years at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. The news source is an email in a newsletter written by Bob Lefsetz, who publishes The Lefsetz Letter which looks at the music industry. The email also reported that Metallica will headline the festival, set to take place in June, says Billboard.

All I can say is rock on. I’m excited! Does anyone else have the deets on this one?

Weekend preview

Tonight:

Parlie’s place, apparently. If Two Sneeze is telling the truth (if that is his/her real name), Parlie lives at Blue Light. Fishy, if you ask me. (You didn’t. I know.)

Tomorrow night:

Rapture. Yes, I just recommended Rapture. XSV is spinning mash-ups, which is awesome for people like me who have the attention span of a housefly. Ironically, I don’t go for a menu with Guinness-battered fish and chips, Thai crab cakes, and three-layer lasagna on the same page. They sound good, though.

Sons of Bill at the Satellite Ballroom. There’s been a lot of hype. Like, on Facebook and in real life (since real people aren’t online ;) ).

The Dawning at the Outback Lodge. This group has been around for forever, right? About time I go hear them.

Some things I like about Charlottesville

I don’t think any of these things are shocking or cutting edge or insightful (it’s been noted that I have no literary talent), but I’m tired of reading about OXO and X-Lounge so I figured I’d throw a few things out there. I imagine there won’t be many comments until someone insults or flirts with someone else, but what the heck.

  • Mel’s- I love Mel’s. I’ve said before that their Meta Burger is my favorite burger in town. Mel and the crew are really nice folks and their food is darn tasty.
  • The Rivanna Trail- I think this is really under-appreciated by the masses. The thing goes all the way around Cville for about 22 miles or so. It is broken up in a few places, but just ask someone if you get off track and you should be able to find your way. I wish it wasn’t so rocky in some places, but overall I think it is great.
  • Cheeseballs w/ ranch at Riverside.
  • Wayside Chicken. Their chicken tenders and combo meals are some of the best values in town.
  • Carter’s Mountain Orchard- I can’t believe I missed peach/nectarine season. I definitely do not take enough advantage of this place in season.
  • The City Market- Ok, most of it is overpriced. But, there are a couple vendors that sell sweet peppers for a very reasonable per pound price ($2 i think?), regardless of type. I miss being able to load up on red peppers without paying an arm and a leg.
  • Crabtree Falls- Some say these falls have the biggest elevation drop of any east of the Mississippi. They aren’t mindblowing, given the twists and turns and pools that prevent you from seeing it in its entirety, but it is still a pretty cool place.
  • Black Friar Theatre- ok so this is about a half hour away in Staunton, but I like this place. I’m no theatre buff, but the shows are entertaining and funny and I’m a huge fan of the musical interludes.
  • Blue Hole- Nothing spectacular, but I’ve always had a good time going out there. The water always seems to be freezing, but after walking up to the swimming hole on a hot day it’s just what you want.
  • $1 games of bowling at Wayne Lanes- I bowl maybe once every two years, but I can appreciate the cost effectiveness of this.
  • Bruce coming to town.
  • Virgil Goode representing me in Congress. Just kidding.

Bob Schneider @ Gravity Lounge

Shout-out to the Saxon Pub for the photo, you guys rock.

I’m going to start what we’ll call the “Wilco List of Bands Everyone Likes Except Lilith, Who Has No Real Reason for Thinking They Suck and is Working On It.” Wilco is at the top. Bjork is number 2. All those emo and alt bands that get played on 101.9 (vom) come and go from it. Bob Schneider’s permanently in the teens. And he’s one of the few famous people I’ve ever met! And he’s completely loyal to his standing gig at the Saxon Pub in Austin! And apparently to his wife too! So if you like scruffy rockstar guys from Texas with a ton of talent, go bla bla bla Gravity Lounge Saturday night for $15.

Did we miss a Lesbian Love Fest this weekend at the Sugarland concert?

Doing my standard browsing of Charlottesville Blogging, I came across this entry from “Lesbiatopia.”

In “Pour some SUGAR on me…PLEASE,” thewishful writer is quite that. Apparantly we missed the Sugarland concert at JPJ this weekend. The author drools about Sugarland & front woman Jennifer Nettles:

She didn’t seem overly excited about the Jennifer Nettles tattoo I’m planning for my entire back, but I feel confident she’ll grow to love it….

We attended their concert in Charlottesville and I think my tongue is still somewhere draped over the chair that was two rows down from me.

Noble Savages: A Revue

I don’t know Lance Brenner, but after Saturday night, he is a legend. I know how concerts work and his seemless presentation of 10 local bands was amazing (and surprisingly well-attended). Although I didn’t leave as a fan of every band there, anyone who wasn’t there missed out.

I know some people in the bands are regular readers here, so I apologize in advance if I don’t heap praise upon your efforts. Not everyone is ready for the big-time. I don’t mean to crap all over your music and friends. I have never performed on stage and admire your balls for doing so, even if I think your music is weak. Anyway, I am just one guy with questionable musical preferences (as proven here: What’s wrong with pop?).

As a public service for those unfamiliar with the local rock/hip-hop scene (as I was before Saturday night), here is my subjective account of each band:

Guilty Pleasure

[pic]

It’s hard being an elitist hipster these days — between all of the “wolf” bands and hoodie/blazer fashions, how does an elitist hipster’s taste out-do everyone else’s?

Well, my friends, it has to do with the guilty pleasure.

My guilty pleasure?

One More Reason to Love (or hate) the Falsies - C-Fest, part II

Hey. Wachadoin’ Saturday? Maybe you should mosey to the Satellite Ballroom where the second C-Fest production, Noble Savages, should be coming off nicely.

Anyone who caught last September’s Freak Fest will remember it as a suprisingly smooth-running crazy-quilt of odd acts leap-frogging between two stages with cameramen, audience and mixed-metaphors in tow. It was well-attended, it was a bucket-o-fun, and it worked largely due to the labors of its mastermind, one Lance Brenner (yes, that Lance Brenner) of The Naked Puritans, Thrum and, of course, the Falsies.

What’s Wrong With Pop (music, not soda)?

Ben Lee

Tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Satellite Ballroom will be a great night for unashamed pop fans. Kate Voegele, Cary Brothers (”Blue Eyes” was on the Garden State soundtrack), and headliner Ben Lee (just as famous for dating Claire Danes as he is for collaborating with Ben Folds) are fun and, objectively-speaking, adorable. While I can’t vouch for the two openers, I have seen Lee perform before and he doesn’t disappoint. That, and he is damn nice. Anyone see him last year at Starr Hill? His new album, “Ripe,” is as catchy as anything as I’ve heard lately. What’s wrong with pop music as escapism? I like avant-garde music as much as the next person, but not everyone has to be innovative like the Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, or [insert name of that other band no one has ever heard of that is awesome but can’t get too big because then they will be sellouts and I can’t be a fan of sellouts].

Maybe I’m not living up to my moniker, but I’ll gladly be there tomorrow night.
