What Dance Party Did We Miss Where Muhammad Ali Asks About Your Manhood?

[pic]

Esquire Does a Cross-Reference on Charlottesville, Manhood and a boxing legend:

I was at a party in Charlottesville, Virginia, about ten years ago with Muhammad Ali. My wife was out there dancing. Everybody was dancing. Only the two of us were left at the table. Muhammad said, “Tell me, can you still get it up?” I said, “Yeah, not great, but from time to time, yes.” He said, “Just curious.” I was charmed by the moment. — David Brown, producer

Weekend

Wassailing. I’m thanking my lucky stars for the X Lounge– it’s just hitting the spot. Tuffy gave OXO a great review on Friday night, and I’ll give it a gold star for Saturday too. I waited in a short line to get in, as they were adhering to their room capacity fire code, but we received our drinks quickly and could move without spilling drinks and pushing people. Saturday was especially enjoyable, as evening hospital staff parties trickled out to the mall. Many lords-a-leaping and ladies dancing… especially at 216 (above).

Giving spirit. Our local March of Dimes chapter held its annual gala at the Doubletree with a “Mad Hatter” theme. Did you go? Brad and Jeff from 106.1 hosted!

Presents. I don’t care for the commodification and commercialization of happiness in its every suede and vanilla-scented form, in principle. In reality, I love big city shopping right before Christmas. So. Much. It’s the one time of year that I drive to Pentagon City Mall and revel in all-American consumerism! Without fail, I spend a day fantasizing about what it would be like to get to design the four-story decorations hanging from the glass ceiling, letting myself test too many perfumes and guiltily enjoying the light-headed high, and trying on things I will never buy to take cell phone pictures of myself in the dressing room in them. Last year, a NYC Abercrombie had male still models with shirts off. Most wonderful time of the year. So how’s Fashion Scare looking this holiday season? Anyone want to share their Barracks valet experience? Richmond shoppers, any parts of 64 to watch out for cops?

Winter sports. I’m afraid I’m not talking about skiing, as Wintergreen’s slopes still haven’t opened. (In fact, an e-blast to its subscriber list with a large photo of snow-making machines blowing ice into the air was anything but uplifting.) I’m talking about football! After Virginia Tech’s win, UVA is going to play Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl! I’m not a sports fan, but I know that any bowl game that has a name other than a corporate sponsor is pretty prestigious. Orange Bowl* vs. Papa John’s Bowl. They should have called it the Pizza Bowl. Mmm. Pizza bowl.

*FedEx sponsors the Orange Bowl. Don’t sue me!

I had an OXOme time

There’s been a lot of stink going ’round about OXO being lame or on a downswing. But…I had never been, save a dinner or 2.

Team Tuffy rolled in there last night around 11 and stayed for a while, and it was really a lot of fun. The sous chef DJ was playing some nice, dance-able stuff, and the barkeeps were nothing if not lovely, courteous, and making nice drinks. Por example: I asked for a drink with gingerbeer…they didn’t have any. Fair enough. So the bartender took the time and effort to make me something that she thought would be comparable. It wasn’t, but it was a nice drink nonetheless and the extra little sumpin’ was appreciated. And, it was PACKED. People were getting down! The dancefloor was full and people seemed to be having a good time.

After a night of bopping around town from Zocalo to the Bang to OXO, the last stop was certainly the best. Hopefully along the same vein as Zinc will be on Thursday.

Love,
Tuffy

Flirting, Dating and Breaking Up with OXO

[pic]

So it was the beginning of August when Iron (who is now deceased, apparently) first first discovered OXO Late Night. I think I’ve experienced enough of OXO. The flirting was awesome, the dating got heated, the sex was kinky and now it’s over. OXO, I’m done with you. You want to know why?

Thursday is the new Thursday

I couldn’t decide if Thursday is the new Friday or the new Tuesday, then I realized it’s… Thursday. There is a LOT to choose from for your evening entertainment. Which would make it normal.

Mozely Rose at the Outback Lodge

It’s a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n roll. I’ve seen this band perform many times. I might even know someone in the band. I might be with the band. Oh f* it. I’m the drummer. But seriously, it’s a great show.

Virginia Film Festival Opening Night Gala

The Virginia Film Festival held its gala at the new Charlottesville Transit Center downtown on Thursday. Tickets went for $75 and included an extensive menu of hors d’oeuvres from buffets and floating trays, wine, and beer. Organizers were smart to use the space now. The modern glass building was met with criticism for its location in 2003, but its construction was well received by the community. The hype surrounding C-VILLE’s “Best Of” party this summer (in spite of a torrential downpour) was well deserved. I was there, I saw it…

Saturday night debrief

In preparation for what promised to be the “party of the year” at Live Arts, I began lubricating a little early at X.

Lilith is/was right - X seems jam packed with hotties lately. Table after table filled with nothing but gorgeous women. From my vantage point leaning up against the front window, I overlooked a vast sea of wondrous beauty. Nary a douche to be seen among them.

I also had a great view of the performance art piece that went on in front of X. I never would’ve thought that such a small woman could expel so much so forcefully. I’ll assume she just had a bit too much to drink, and it wasn’t the fine food at X that caused her discomfort (the home-made chips with aioli dipping sauce we had was excellent, and neither of my Hefe’s had any trace of skunkiness).

After that, it was off to Live Arts for the main event!

Weekend Gallivanting

Here’s what’s on the cVillain list for this beautiful fall weekend:

Ward Churchill, the guy who got famous for saying bad things about 9/11 victims and who wrote “as for those in the World Trade Center… Well, really, let’s get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break” will speak at 9PM at Vinegar Hill. We are definitely attending to see all the heckling that will undoubtedly take place.

Ever since X-Lounge did it, everyone thinks it’s cool to have a DJ. Look for DJs at Zinc, OXO, Mono Loco and X-Lounge. Too much dancing. HEY BARS… Let’s combine forces and rotate every weekend. I don’t think there are enough dancers in C-Ville and you are going to ruin our fun by fragmenting the danceophiles.

Go to X-Lounge and support our first advertiser!

Russian carni kids are coming to the Paramount on Saturday at 7PM. Yes it’s expensive, but it’s really cool. [CK]

Recently, Lagrape reviewed Clean House. It continues this weekend at Live Arts.

For all those who think that Virginia has enough talent, Teen Idol is coming to the Music Resource Center on Saturday. [TI]

Who can say no to robotic car lovin’? Go watch the urban robotic car team pimp their ride at Star Hill Brewery on Saturday from Noon until 2PM. Good luck guys. Maybe you can drive it to South Street and.. nevermind. [Team Jeff]

Courtesy of Oy (thanks we love you)… starting at noon on Saturday, La Taza has a benefit concert for sustainable farming in Guatemala. $5 dollars gets you specials and the Acoustic Groove Trio, Darrell Rose, Dreaming Isabelle, Kings of Belmont, Monticello Roa and Trees on Fire.

What did we miss? Don’t forget to pick your favorite public space for our clandestine meetup… TBA!
