While being repeatedly disappointed with the late night at Cassis and X-Lounge and there being no late night at Ten yet I can’t help but feeling an ever increasing sadness about the loss of OXO. It’s been over a month now.
What other late night spots have come up since? Are people happy with Cassis, X-Lounge and the ever exciting Escafe?
I was also wondering, we all know Shenanigans has migrated to X-Lounge, the OXO door guy is now the door guy at Cassis and another all time favorite bartender has retired altogether. What happened to the other OXO bartenders and bartendresses? I keep my eyes peeled but I can’t seem to spot them anywhere.
What are cVillain’s thoughts?

I was privy to a houseguest this weekend, he a U.Va. alumnus who hasn’t spent much time in Charlottesville since being graduated in 2003. We shall call him Cristóbal.
Opportunity! I bum-rushed him with as much cVillainy as his senses—and his liver—could handle. Below is our hitlist from the weekend. »Read More

Like, OMG, it’s so important that a restaurant bans smoking that it makes it on TV. That’s pretty cool.
The banning will happen on June 1st, according to the McGrady’s website.
I love the patio and the uber-cheap drink specials, but …can we get a ban on the bad food, too?
In case anyone was wondering, happy hour specials after the break…

A little birdie sends this one in.
Beginning next Friday (29th) Cassis will have Sarah behind the bar, making her magical drinks
You may remember Sarah from our list of superlatives. She won “Most Entertaining/Hottest Bartender”
Is it just me or is everyone doing late night stuff these days?

Mas‘ Tomas (we think) chimes in on one of our most disagreed upon posts about asking bartenders to take back drinks based on the customer’s tastes.
recommendations are the lingua franca of restaurants and a good bartender understands that. if he/she makes a recommendation, or suggests a signature drink, you are within your rights to send it back if it doesn’t match your expectations or the bartender’s description. individual preferences for strength and potency aside, a well-made cocktail should be a delight, not a harrowing challenge to finish. a good cocktail is like good sex - both partners know if it’s good, both know when something is amiss. however, if you catch a bad one, or one just poorly mixed, don’t lie and say it’s great or you have never felt like this before. have the bartender taste it too. feedback is the second best tip you can leave an establishment, even if it hurts their feelings. sure, bartenders are always busy and don’t always have time to hold your hand as you experiment with alcohol or beverages you are unfamiliar with. stick with the basics, then, after you have established some level of trust with that bartender, let them take you where you’ve never been before. there should be respite in your nepenthe.

Nice weather made everyone giddy like a schoolchild.
South Street - Party of Sausage, awesome if you are into that. Did anyone notice the two Christmas tree colored beauties at the bar earlier on in the night? All I can say is WOW.
Zo Ca Lo - What is this like the new hipster bar or something like that? It totally is. Rich hipsters, for serious. Word on the street is their short rib special was nothing short of amazing.
Blue Light - Same old. Crowded, little rednecky, fun.
Escafe - Seemed a little slow to me. The music was friggin’ awesome.

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like cocktails have gotten more expensive in this town. I am a big fan of cocktails, so much, in fact, that my friends often crucify me for not drinking more manly drinks, a la Bud Light. Cocktails represent a right de passage in this town. It’s what separates the gentlemen from the boys. Honestly, cocktails represent the defining factor of how a restaurant thinks about itself.
Why cocktails?
Cocktails imbue those who drink them with status, prestige and mostly, alcohol. They are a way of explaining to your friends, I have an exotic palette and my sexual appeal is exponentially related to the exoticness of my palette. From whiskey muddles, to dirty martinis, you have a host of purchased meanings to flaunt at the bar. Oh, and did I mention restaurants love to be the granter of sex appeal?
Making us think that buying the silver fiery blue ball (tequilla, 151, blue curacao, in a baller glass) will get us chicks is oh so right. Now the question is, do you buy that drink for the lady or for the dude? Restaurants also make out like bandits. »Read More
