The Virginia Arts of the Books Center and Charlottesville Office Machines are putting on a TYPE-A-THON. Its like a phone-a-thon, except you don’t need to call anyone and no charitable donations are involved. It sounds like you just show up, and type anything you want on a good old-fashioned typewriter (for those of you who have no idea what this antiquated machine is, click here). If the end result is as long as I imagine it can be (3 type writers going non-stop for 14 hours), I think the only place this can be displayed is at the “almost ready for summer 2009″ Landmark Hotel. It sure seems tall enough, and we all know we need something to cover that hideous eyesore, even if it is cheese-stained stream of consciousness poetic musings.
The idea is kind of cute; put together as much random drivel on one continuous sheet of paper and see if it makes sense. If that isn’t a good enough reason to go…the free mac n’cheese is. What isn’t addressed is if they are serving the amazing white-truffle infused cabot cheddar cheese mac n’cheese from the x-lounge. I don’t know if we will show up for that Kraft nonsense.
Just two questions: Are they using recycled paper? Does anyone know/remember how to use a typewriter?
It’s Easter Weekend and that means exciting things like brunch, easter egg hunts, church and family time come into play.
Got hot chicks in roller skates?Charlottesville Derby Dames will have a Spring Break and Bruise Benefit Concert @ Outback Lodge. Doors open at 8PM. Tickets are $10. Word is they are also looking for practice space, refs and more skaters.
Don’t forget your Easter brunch. If you aren’t doing the at-home thing, our readers chose Boar’s Head as the best brunch spot in Charlottesville. Our favorite is still Blue Moon, but honestly, it’s probably best to stay at home and avoid the crowds. Poached eggs aren’t that hard to make.
Easter egg hunt? Join Charlottesville Parks and Rec for the Easter Eggtravaganza on Saturday, April 11 from 10 AM – 11:15 AM at Charlottesville High School. The event will feature candy, prizes, balloons, moon bounces, face painting and refreshments. Plus a special visit from the Easter Bunny! The Easter egg hunt will begin at 11 am. The event is rain or shine! For more information, please call (434) 970-3260.
Wow, you would think after nearly two years of warning, that the general population would be able to pronounce Foxfield correctly. They can’t. 95% of the people who say Foxfield pronounce it with an S at the end. Foxfields is incorrect, shows you are a poser and pretty much means you contribute nothing to one of the most exciting events in Charlottesville.
Don’t believe us? Read our amazingly awesome 2008 preview which discusses everything from the notorious piss trough to our favorite drink. For this year, ask your Foxfield questions in the comment section, and we’ll be sure to answer them in a zany followup post.
Are you going to Foxfield?
P.S. The Extra Special Student Complaint! This year we have two new police rules: (1) you don’t have to wear 21+ armbands and (2) you have to carry booze into Foxfield in 14″x14″x14″ container which, unless you can shrink wine bottles, you’ll have a seriously difficult time not breaking the rules.
I know it’s been a while since we’ve done a weekend preview, but there are some sweet things happening you can’t miss.
St Patty’s Day Parties. Ours, obviously is on Tuesday, but many bars are celebrating over the weekend. Check out McGrady’s, X-Lounge and Boylan for the fun.
Dark Side of the Moon at Gravity Lounge on Saturday night. Us and Them, come together to pay tribute to Pink Floyd’s Classic Dark Side of the Moon. Expect many stoners and a sweet show. $5 and doors open at 10PM.
Sprout Film Festival on Friday night. It features films made by and about people with developmental disabilities, highlighting the issues facing this population and the many ways they enhance our lives and community. More details here.
MONSTER JAM. Friday and Saturday nights. You like bud and trucks? This event is for you. Tickets are $20. Buy them here.

Join Us for Our Block Party for 500 East with London as the theme and a “Pub Crawl” starting at 6pm
Who’s ready for some football? Even if you don’t like watching football, you can’t complain about partying with friends, eating wings, waiting for those crazy commercials and wasting your Sunday afternoon. I know everyone has different plans for Sunday, but I imagine well over 50% of you are involved in this event. Anything special happening in Charlottesville?
Charlottesville will soon be home to a food and wine festival, officially named “The International Food and Wine Experience of Charlottesville.” Spanning 3 days, this conference (IFWEOC for short) intends to make Charlottesville the “Wine Capital of the East” with various fine food and wine experiences. The Experience involves a whole host of local wineries and restaurants, well-known chefs and foodies.
What are these experiences?

Thanks to your input for Halloween, we have a pretty scary list of things. Overall, we expect this weekend to be insanely busy. It’s homecoming weekend with a home football game, a film festival, hundreds of people coming in town for some historic society event (I still can’t find info on this) and then, oh ya, Halloween parties galore.
Between the Historic Society visit (on the train?), the film festival, homecoming weekend and all the standard Halloween events, what are you doing? We’ve heard of parties at the IX, X-Lounge, 2:16, Rapture and the list goes on.
If you you can send us a link for what you are doing, we’ll compile one scary post for all the Halloween events and parties this weekend.
While you may question a party which has too many Afters in the name, you probably want to check out the 17th annual Live Arts Gala on Saturday, November 8th, 2008.
While our favorite, Artini proved too difficult and didn’t bring in enough dollars to continue, the Gala is the party to attend in Charlottesville. How many parties can claim they last for 17 years?
