Observations of Spring Fever

Wow, what a night.  I hadn’t seen this many people on the mall in forever.  Everyone came out of hibernation yesterday.  The tough part was finding a nice place to be outside with the sea of people that came downtown.

Ventana (new place in place of Kiki) was full of Law and Darden students wearing sun dresses.  I didn’t go in, but it looks like it was pretty exciting.   While we have ripped on Splendora’s in the past (see The Great Cookie Roundup, one of my favorite articles, or Inside Scoop in Gelato), I did have the pleasure to try the gelato again.  Spendora’s has gotten way better and I will write a new review.

Ten, as usual, was full of hot Dardenites and L1s, 2s, and 3s.   Yummy.  I also had the pleasure of walking by OXO which looked semi-bondage to me.  I think OXO kicked ass on the interest level; everyone I talked to was aware of the party and their curiosity was there.  But, the problem was no one wanted to go; perhaps it was the $15 cover, or the fear of leather. I don’t know. Did you go?  We should have some pictures coming soon.

I’ve Got a Fever…Spring Fever

Here is it April. I keep catching glimpses of the sun and in hopeful anticipation of it sticking round, whip out my sunglasses. The second I get them on the clouds roll in. Sun or no sun, I have definitely got a bad case of spring fever. No matter the man, when I’m walking down the mall, I just want to jump everyone. I even steal extra looks at girls in their cute little skirts. I am in no way interested in them, but can feel the effects of cabin fever reversing. I am ready to go out and play, playmate optional, but preferred.

I know all this built up anxiety and eagerness stem from the need for outdoor physical activity. I am sure you are all right there with me. So in an effort to avoid needing one of those lovely over-the-counter paternity tests, I am offering a list of some outdoor fun to enjoy in the spring in Charlottesville.

Get Outdoors–Meet Some New People with Outdoor Adventure Social Club

Play Some Kickball or Go for a Run

Hike the Appalachian Trail

Or More Hiking…with the lovely city of Cville

Star Watch on Skyline

Enjoy Fridays at 5:00

Winery and Brewery Visits

And then there is a random collection of local things to do (some boring–I’d avoid the tax prep. stuff — others more entertaining)

More simply you could just have Dinner or a Drink Outside at: Blue Light, Miller’s, Sticks, Orzo, McGrady’s, Christian’s, Bizzou, Etc. This is always a guaranteed way to enjoy nice weather, but may not provide much needed spring fever release.

Weekend Preview: Feb 22 to Feb 25 2008

Van Halen got canceled (or so we heard), so there have got to be some more things to do this weekend.

In no particular order, my top 4:

  1. UVA Dance Marathon Party - Friday, 10PM to raise money for UVA Children’s hospital.
  2. Old School Freight Train - Friday, 7:30PM at Gravity Lounge.
  3. Ryan Shaw is playing at Outback at 8PM TONIGHT. He was scheduled to open for Van Halen. Read more at 106.1. D/R told me that 106.1 auctioned off Ryan to the highest paying venue this afternoon.
  4. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit/Will Hoge @ Satellite 8PM on Saturday

Week in Review: 2/10/2008 to 2/17/2008

charlottesville week in review furWe did a major overhaul of the site this week and we appreciate everyone’s continued interest in our site. We understand the colors are a little harsh, but we think everything overall should be better. Besides hell breaking loose, we get brow beaten by law students for watching a tazing, obsess over Valentine’s Day and bitch about rudeness of smokers.

We did cry twice this week– once about Kiki closing and once about the loss of one of our favorite baristas from Cafe Cubano. Things did take a turn for the better as we pranced around in our fur coats and decided that serious drug dealing can happen on the Downtown Mall. Enjoy with a Snack Pack. »Read More

Local Food Event

Left of Center is hosting a local food get together at Maya at 5:30 PM tomorrow (Tuesday).

Our local food economy: why it’s important to eat local, why it’s so difficult to be a farmer, and how family farms are all but illegal in Virginia today. Colin Steele and Lynsie Watkins will tell their story of creating “Perfect Flavor,” the Waynesboro ice cream company making frozen treats entirely with local, seasonal ingredients. They believe passionately in the importance of supporting local farmers, and they have faced some huge hurdles in realizing that dream. And Gail Hobbes-Paige, of Caromont Farm, will talk about her experiences as a farmer, chef, caterer, goat farmer and cheesemaker. Her broad knowledge provides rare insight into our local food economy.

Should be exciting. Food…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
