10 Acts To Catch This Weekend At Crozet Music Festival

Crozet Music Festival’s third year running kicks off tomorrow at noon. This year is the first year they have added a third full day of performances (the previous two years were Saturday and Sunday only).  I encourage everyone to try to make it out, because each day is sure to have its gems. It will definitely be my first time. Here’s a brief list of acts I would suggest making a point to catch:

  1. Cricket and the Whip – if I am not mistaken, this is c’ville locals Straight Punch to the Crotch in disguise. I can’t say why they’re playing under a different name, but their synth-party-folk will keep your asses moving.
  2. Six Chasing Seven – piano-based pop-rock from Lynchburg with surprisingly infectious hooks and by no means lacking in soul.
  3. 6 Day Bender -  banjo-picking alterna-folk; a fairly common genre choice in this region, but these guys don’t make it suck so much!
  4. William Walter & Company -  they blend southern rock with folk and blues, but not in the same old way. I think my favorite part of WW’s tunes is his unique and signature vocal style.
  5. Chick Tragic and the Roosters – Carleigh Nesbit and Carl Anderson’s down-home bluegrass is easy on the ears and heavy on the fiddle!
  6. Trees on Fire - there is never a dull moment with these genre-bending youngsters and I predict a large festival  will be a perfect setting for their indie-synth-jams
  7. Downbeat Project – easygoing and groovy with hints of Ben Harper and Jack Johnson.
  8. Travis Elliott – you may think you’ve heard him a trillion times with his acoustic at any number of bars and restaurants in town, but if you haven’t caught the full-band show, you haven’t really heard Travis Elliott at all!
  9. Horsehead – southern rock featuring former member of Buck Cherry, Cracker and Vinnie Vincent’s band. I’ve only recently become aware of these guys, but I think they could possibly be a highlight of the weekend.
  10. Astronomers - one minute they’re dancey, the next, they’re dark and ominous. Served with a heavy helping of piano, spacey guitars and a hot female bassist!

There you have it folks, surely there are ten others that I’ve never even had the pleasure to hear and I certainly hope so. SEE YOU ALL THERE!

Charlottesville’s Food and Wine Experience Postponed

charlottesville food wine festival

I was informed earlier this week that the Charlottesville Food and Wine Experience has been moved to the weekend of July 31st.  We didn’t receive any information explaining the rescheduling other than the quote from the festival’s president, Tim O’Brien which read:

The rescheduling of this event will further enhance this world-class gathering for wine connoisseurs and food enthusiasts right here in Charlottesville.

I imagine this has something to do with the ticket prices and the economy.  I understand this is a high-end event, but we had a fair number of complaints about ticket prices from foodies on our site.  30-something downtown hoo explained it best in a comment:

Weekend Preview 5/2/2008 to 5/4/2008

This weekend is going to rock the shazbot… why?

shazbot

Music

Um, I can never beat Shaun to the punch.  You are going to miss a lot of sweet stuff if you don’t read his preview over at cvilleMUSE.  How do you like these apples? Van Halen (please don’t be canceled), Ryan Shaw, Birdlips and Friday’s After Five (with Eli Cook).

First Friday’s

How could you overlook Pinkie’s amazing preview on cvilleMUSE. She covers every single venue and every single artist, with links to boot!  Apparently, there will be MUSE special ops walking around handing out business cards.  Try to find them and tell them Thor sent you.

Off the Cusp

If MUSE always kicks my butt on real events at least I can find stuff off the beaten track. If you are a techno-mac-loving-uber-nerd, you should go to BeCamp, which is a part communist, part hippy part electronic festival of computers and crazy ideas like “FOAF,” “Grails,” “Parallel Computing,” “Selenium -web tier testing” and a bunch of other things that scare me.

Enjoy your weekends! What did we miss?

Virginia Festival of the Book

charlottesville virginia festival book 2008

Charlottesville has one of those big festivals coming up that you probably know as the “Virginia Festival of the Book.” We like to think of it as more of a rave for smart people. It happens from March 26th to 30th, 2008.

Looking through the participants makes me realize that I am completely unaware of the 99% of the 250 participants. This only verifies what I already knew. I don’t read books.

Maybe you do and maybe this is a good opportunity for our cVillains to start their book club that was mentioned a while ago. Anyway, check out the festival and let us know what smart people should know.

Do you read anything?

Key headliners include:

Mike Farrell (MASH Actor)

Walter Mosley (wrote Devil in a Blue Dress)

Roger Mudd (Emmy winning journalist & anchor)
