UVA Football Players Did Not Steal Booze from Club 216

Well, if you remember our friends who allegedly stole beer from a cooler at Club 216, you can now forget them.  They have been found not guilty because there was not enough evidence to convict them.  The argument used against them (I am not kidding) : “they didn’t offer to pay when they were met by security.”  I have no idea what this means, but it sounds like a lame reason to arrest people.

UVA Sign Ban Revoked

Looks like the “Fire Groh” signs can go back up.  Maybe with UVA’s horrid record this year, the athletic department is trying to send the coaching staff a message?

What really doesn’t make sense is this quote from Littlepage, UVA’s athletic director:

The policy prohibiting signs, banners and flags in all UVa athletics venues has become a distraction and has taken the focus away from supporting our student-athletes. Our football team needs our support right now and that should be our collective focus. With that in mind, I am repealing immediately the policy prohibiting signs, banners and flags in all athletics venues. I encourage all of our fans to be in attendance at Saturday night’s football game with Maryland. My hope is our fans will wear orange and be prepared to support the Cavaliers.

So, you still think the signs are a distraction and don’t support UVA, but you remove the ban?

Are You Ready for Some Football?!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aheram/440478825/Yes? Tis the seasons of beer, face paint, and no parking on Saturdays. That is right college (and pro) football season is in full swing (two games deep). I have listed all the dates and locations of UVA AND VTech games for this season. I know we are a Cville site (hello UVA), but it only seems fair to our VTech alum to include both schedules. The UVA/VTech face off for the year will go down in Blacksburg (UVA held it last season).

I know everyone on this site isn’t a sports lover, but for those that are…grab your cushy bleacher pads, your cooler of beer, and your favorite team’s jersey, it’s game time. (I honestly tried to put the schedules side by side but they refused to fit).

USC Will Take Over the Doubletree Hotel, Staff and Decorations and All, This Weekend

The UVA Today blog linked to a USC blog that detailed an advance team member’s trip here to scope out the Doubletree, the field, the locker rooms, etc.  For the USC football team’s trip here.  What struck me was this comment about the Doubletree:

“The Trojans’ team hotel will look just like home when the team arrives in August.

The hotel staff will be decked out in USC gear and the hotel will be festooned with cardinal-and-gold banners and decorations, all in an effort to make the Trojans feel at home, Kemper said.

“We might not want to leave,” Slutak joked after hearing about the slice of hospitality.

But it’ll just be another random road team for the hotel, since the staff and lobby will be decorated in the colors of Virginia’s next opponent just a week later.

“You know who we have ties to?” Hucek, the general manager, said with a smile. “Whoever is in town that weekend.”"

They’re going to buy USC apparel for the entire staff?  How much does that cost?  Does that seem wasteful?   UVA makes them a ton of money between tourists, parents, alumni, and sports fans and they turn around and funnel that money into the programs of other schools?  It just seems so bizarre. [Editor’s Note: Not sure exactly where the money comes from for this, anyone know?]

I have to imagine that people in town might be pretty turned off if they knew about this.

Four Days in Jail: Former UVA Football Player Does Time

Oh Charlottesville’s pride and joy. The former UVA football player, J’Courtney Rydell Williams charged with credit card fraud, plead guilty and was sentenced to four days in jail. He began serving his sentence today after his trial. Lester Guy Spellman III also plead guilty and was handed the same sentence. The most important detail not to be forgotten: they must pay $42.40 in restitution. Wow! Imagine the hours of work it will take to pay off such a debt.

UVa Honor Code: Smoke and Mirrors

I always hear this hoopla around the UVa honor code…how its so great and magically delicious, and EVERYONE at U.Va. is the most ethical and honest person in the world…oh, and how its so strict: one strike and you’re out. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The Hook reports that 3rd year cornerback Michael Brown was involved in an automobile break-in early February. (edit) If convicted, this would not be his first crime either (close edit). He plead guilty to trespassing and starting a fight at the Delta Upsilon fraternity his freshman year. It’s usually in the movies where star-athletes are protected by the almighty football coach and overbearing provost. Could the apple fall that close to the tree? U.Va. uses the following criteria to determine if an honor violation has occurred:
