Weekend Preview

weekend charlottesville

Since it’s summertime and the students have started their return to Charlottesville, bars should be triphopping this weekend.  Besides the obvious music and arts events covered by cvilleMUSE, we’ve got a few events that might float your boat or tube.  Whether it’s a barbeque or bluegrass, you have no excuse to get off your butt and go do stuff.  Let us know if we missed anything!

What Would cVillain Look Like if It Were Visual?

There is this cool little tool called “Wordle” that I discovered on the internet today.  You can cut/paste text into a box and it organizes the words into a pretty picture.  I played with it for a bit and here are some examples…

Crazy Weekend Stories Here

We need to hear some crazy/exciting/courageous/drunk/audacious/naughty/lively villain stories. I missed the “drunk posting” thread so much I had to recreate a similar post. What did you guys do last night? Saturday night?

I’ll start. I was strolling down the mall after watching a movie (it was to freaking hot to be anywhere that didn’t have AC) when I stumble upon Kiki’s replacement. I wander in for a quick drink. I make my way to the bathroom after the drink and wait a good 15 minutes. I am not the biggest fan of waiting. Finally a girl stumbles out of the bathroom with a sneaky grin. I head for the door and as I touch the handle a boy leaves the room. Oh my. What fun they had on a Friday night. Wait it gets a little better! I walk in the bathroom to not only discover they have a cool TV that allows you to view what is going on at the bar, but also the girl’s panties.

What an interesting drink I had.

Charlottesville Cricket Club: The Real Deal

I know what you are thinking… What the hell is Cricket? I’ve included this instructional video for you to learn how to play the game.

Ok, that was not real, but I hope you laughed. Did you realize that Charlottesville actually has a cricket league? They have named themselves the “Charlottesville Cricket League” or CVCC for short. The website explains:

CVCC is comprised of more than 30 players of various ethnicities and backgrounds. The team practices every Wednesday and some Sundays at Darden Towe Memorial Park. We welcome and include enthusiastic local residents in our weekend practice games. Since the formation of the team in 2005, CVCC has been taking part in cricket tournaments in Virginia and North Carolina.

I’ve never really understood cricket but after a bit of reading it isn’t that difficult. I’ve included a real instructional video after the break, but essentially the batting team tries to score by hitting the ball far enough away from them that they can run back and forth with the other batter. It’s much more like baseball than you would think.

Pictures, instructional video and local game video after the break!

Weekend Preview

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sweetjewels/2041212007/I jacked the weekend preview to get revenge on Thor for stealing my Washington Post story. What’s the line? The Early bird gets the worm? Uck worms…which are certain to be out in full force after all this rain. Unfortunately, according to the weather forecast, this is not the last of it. Today is supposed to be rain with thunder and lightning (geee, thanks Thor). Tomorrow is calling for partly sunny with some rain. Sunday calls for rain, rain, and more rain. Don’t let the weather keep you in (unless there are tornado warnings, in which case only weather women should be out)…put on your red panties and check out some of what is lined up for the weekend:

Happy National High Five Day!

high five kittyGadzooks! I had completely forgotten it was National High Five Day (”third Thursday of April each year”). To quote from, what I believe is, the holiday’s founding document:

I propose to you, a National High Five Day. A day when, without inhibition, people can freely exchange high fives between all different genders, races, heights, and social classes. There’s nothing else to it. Just a day when U.Va., and America as a whole, will be looking to give high fives, and will be just as ready to receive them.

Huzzah! High fives all around. I enthusiastically endorse the celebration of this holiday. With a few caveats:

  1. Don’t be Dane Cook. That is, don’t be the loud, in-your-face wanker forcing people TO GIVE YOU A HIGH FIVE zOMG! Rather, I suggest a hand in the air with a polite and suggestive, “High five?” You’ll be surprised how many people say, “Sure!”
  2. Don’t be Borat. Yes. I know you can do the accent very, very well. And saying “High five?!” in that accent was indeed very funny. In 2006. It is now 2008. Welcome to the future.

With these caveats in place, let us go forth high-fiving. It is the handshake of our era and a charitable way to make a stranger’s day a little bit brighter.

I’ve Got a Fever…Spring Fever

Here is it April. I keep catching glimpses of the sun and in hopeful anticipation of it sticking round, whip out my sunglasses. The second I get them on the clouds roll in. Sun or no sun, I have definitely got a bad case of spring fever. No matter the man, when I’m walking down the mall, I just want to jump everyone. I even steal extra looks at girls in their cute little skirts. I am in no way interested in them, but can feel the effects of cabin fever reversing. I am ready to go out and play, playmate optional, but preferred.

I know all this built up anxiety and eagerness stem from the need for outdoor physical activity. I am sure you are all right there with me. So in an effort to avoid needing one of those lovely over-the-counter paternity tests, I am offering a list of some outdoor fun to enjoy in the spring in Charlottesville.

Get Outdoors–Meet Some New People with Outdoor Adventure Social Club

Play Some Kickball or Go for a Run

Hike the Appalachian Trail

Or More Hiking…with the lovely city of Cville

Star Watch on Skyline

Enjoy Fridays at 5:00

Winery and Brewery Visits

And then there is a random collection of local things to do (some boring–I’d avoid the tax prep. stuff — others more entertaining)

More simply you could just have Dinner or a Drink Outside at: Blue Light, Miller’s, Sticks, Orzo, McGrady’s, Christian’s, Bizzou, Etc. This is always a guaranteed way to enjoy nice weather, but may not provide much needed spring fever release.
