Summer is finally here, and it seems like there’s a feeling in the air that you could do so much with your wonderful warm-weather time! I’d like to propose that you take up the cause of ending sexual assault, a major public health crisis in our country and in our town right now – with nearly 25% of the population suffering from something preventable. The Sexual Assault Resource Agency is providing three ways for you to step into this cause. You can be trained to answer hotline calls for people in crisis and in need of support, or you can be involved in outreach – either as an activist planner on the SARA outreach Action Committee, or as a activist ‘do’er – implementing the programs and campaigns through the SARA outreach Task Force. Learn more and apply at http://www.sexualassaultresources.org/volunteer.htm . You’ll meet awesome people, and feel highly fulfilled because you’re making a positive impact on so many people!

Overpriced tickets, champagne toasts and party hats. Need I say more? With the multitude of choices around Charlottesville, Beautiful, But Treacherous asks:
What is there to do, if there is anything worth doing, for New Year’s?
Thanks to your input for Halloween, we have a pretty scary list of things. Overall, we expect this weekend to be insanely busy. It’s homecoming weekend with a home football game, a film festival, hundreds of people coming in town for some historic society event (I still can’t find info on this) and then, oh ya, Halloween parties galore.
While you may question a party which has too many Afters in the name, you probably want to check out the 17th annual Live Arts Gala on Saturday, November 8th, 2008.
While our favorite, Artini proved too difficult and didn’t bring in enough dollars to continue, the Gala is the party to attend in Charlottesville. How many parties can claim they last for 17 years?
Honestly, this weekend is going to be pretty chill and we don’t just mean that literally. Importantly, this is your last weekend to go to the City Market. Next week is chock full of Halloween, movie festival and other festive things, so this weekend looks like it’s going to be slow. MUSE has your arts and music coverage; STYLE keeps you looking fine.
In addition to our normal wine tastings at Market Street, Beer Run and Crush, we’ve got some horse races, pumpkin carving and a chocolate festival. The weather should be beautiful on Saturday and Sunday. Make sure you enjoy yourselves before it gets too cold. As always, checkout cvilleMUSE for arts and music events and cvilleStyle for what to wear. »Read More

Don’t forget to check cvilleMUSE. It’s all after the break.
