Skynet Seeks Local Human Capital

Counter_IntelligenceThe 2010 opening of the new Defense Intelligence Agency location north of Charlottesville is bringing quite the deluge of job opportunities, with a current list of over 100 open positions.  The job fair is open for application entries until midnight tonight (November 24th), and carries with it a hefty $64 Million in possible salaries.

The DIA is a major producer and manager of military intelligence for the Department of Defense, and also serves as the lead organization for the Defense Intelligence Community.  It will join the existing National Ground Intelligence Center, a branch of the Army Intelligence & Security Command, which was founded here in 1994. »Read More

Daily Progress Furloughs Employees

layoff furlough charlottesville

Yesterday it was GE Fanuc, today it’s the Daily Progress and its parent company, Media General. The Charlottesville newspaper has decided require a mandatory 10 unpaid days off for employees with four of those days occurring before the end of the month.

Recession’s First Major Layoffs Hit Charlottesville: 17th Largest Employer Furloughs 300 Employees

This is bad news.  GE Fanuc, Charlottesville’s 17th largest employer will furlough half of its employees, or roughly 300 people, for a two week period starting next week.

While layoffs on the scale of hundreds of employees at a time have yet to effect Charlottesville, this is the first sign that things will hurt.  Furlough, in this case, means that GE will continue to pay for benefits of these employees but not pay salary.  If GE Fanuc is having problems paying half of its employees, then surely layoffs should be expected.

Sorry for everyone involved in this, but things will get worse.  We’ve been watching the labor market conditions and it looks like (doing very unofficial math) unemployment in the Charlottesville MSA could be over 5% by this time.  Thoughts?

UVA and State Budget Slashes

UVA’s budget has been cut by about 7% which accounts for about $10 million of the $160 million state budget allocation.  While the state only accounts for about 8% of UVA’s budget [ref], this still means that UVA won’t fill 11 open positions.  Additionally, this will delay the State’s planned 2% salary increases.

Layoffs aren’t going to happen, but this cut shoudn’t be thought of as the end to that fear.

The UVA budget cut is part of a much larger plan from Virginia Governer Tim Kaine.  In 2009, Virginia expects budget shortfalls of nearly $1 billion.  In order to combat the shortfall, Kaine plans 578 job cuts, a salary freeze on all state employees, across the board education cuts and more.  A detailed list is after the break: »Read More

$59 Million Government Facility to House 1,000 Jobs North of Charlottesville

Government Facility CharlottesvilleRecently a Chicago contractor was awarded with a $58.5 million dollar contact to build a 46 acre facility for a “Joint-Use Intelligence Analysis Facility” slightly north of Charlottesville. The facility will house over 1,000 jobs and is expected to bring a total of 1,500 jobs to the area by its expected completion date in 2010.

The Daily Progress reports that the facility will be located slightly north of the CHO airport and across 29. This sounds great, but what about traffic? 29N traffic is already a nightmare.

Is the Charlottesville economy up or down or in the middle?

[this question sent in by Jim Duncan]

I live vicariously through this site (ate at the Box last week with a buddy thanks to the comments) and see the readers here as market leaders in their consumption and entertainment habits.

What do you see? Are employers hiring/firing? Are more people working multiple jobs? Are drinks more expensive? Are rents up or down?

How does the Charlottesville economy feel to you?
