Considering that very few people reading this actually know who I am, I could probably get away with claiming some fancy-pants background in reviewing fine restaurants and upscale cuisine. In the spirit of integrity, however, I’ll admit that I am in no way qualified to critique the winner of a AAA Four Diamond Award. Actually, given my fondness for making inappropriate jokes in inappropriate places, I’m not sure I was qualified to even go there. But go there I did, along with my wife, sister, brother-in-law, aunt, and parents, who were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Needless to say, it was really good. »Read More

NY Daily News reporter Jill Fergus had the exquisite pleasure of visiting our slice of heaven for what seems like a weekend. She stayed at Keswick Hall (fancy!) and sipped wine in the tasting room at Barboursville Vineyards. Asides from other tourist related stops on her trip, she ends recommending Fleurie and Enoteca for great dining experiences. I only bring this up because I find it strange she praises Fleurie for a pan-roasted halibut with truffle butter crust and rack of lamb with fennel puree, and then contrasts such a palate tempting plate with a recommendation for a prosciutto, mozzarella and basil panini at Enoteca.
Yes, the foodie force inside me is a bit confused at how such a basic dish is written up as a “must-have” from our selection of great local eats. You can get that kind of standard Italian paysan food at Starbucks. Looking at Enoteca’s menu in more detail, there are some really tasty items like:
- panini: speck, taleggio, moscato-soaked pears
- salad: bresaola, arugula, parmigiano, lemon, olive oil
I hope Jill comes back to cville soon and look past panini. She just barely touched the tip of the iceberg here. Thanks for the great Charlottesville tribute!
If you had to recommend one restaurant and dish to Jill, what would it be?
