Live Arts Presents Eurydice

eurydice

Tomorrow, Live Arts opens their final production of the 2008-2009 season: Eurydice as told by Sarah Ruhl. The tale of Eurydice and Orpheus is a myth from ancient Greece, originally told by Virgil. Sarah Ruhl is also the author of The Clean House, which played to great success in Live Arts’ 2007-2008 season. Ruhl brings her unique touch of poetry and comedy to her telling of Eurydice, weaving hope with tragedy and exploring the simultaneous tenacity and fragility of memory in the depths of the Underworld across the river Styx. For folks who loved The Clean House or who are fans of quick writing that keeps audiences on their toes, this play is for you. »Read More

Live Arts Presents: Tartuffe by Molière

Live Arts has never been afraid of a little controversy on their stage. And lucky for them, neither was French playwright Molière. His play Tartuffe was so controversial that the Archbishop of Paris issued a decree threatening to excommunicate anyone performing, attending, or even reading the play after it was first performed in 1664. A comical critique of feigned religious piety and blatant hypocrisy, it was eventually recognized for its brilliance and humor and was allowed to be performed in its final form in Paris in 1669.

Directed by Betsy Tucker, Molière’s play will be performed again in the Live Arts DownStage from May 1 to May 23. »Read More

Live Arts Artistic Director Resigns

John Gibson, the Artistic Director of Live Arts has tendered his resignation, effective January 4, 2010.

From the marketing release:

“The resignation date of January 4, 2010 will mark his 18th year with the theater. During that time Gibson has been the face of the theater and the driving force behind its success. Live Arts began as a volunteer theater in 1990, a little over a year before Gibson’s arrival. He has overseen the production of more than 200 shows and 50 special events.

“Working to “forge theater and community,” Gibson has mounted shows that combine excellence and entertainment and that challenge our intellect and our values while building a community of performers, costumers, carpenters, designers, musicians and all the other contributors necessary to make Live Arts one of the premier non-professional theaters in the nation.”

“John Conover, the chair of the Live Arts board, believes “John Gibson has been the face, the heart and the brain of Live Arts. He is irreplaceable. Meaningful theater and great art, however, are not about replacement. We honor the old but reach for the new. We are a thriving community with a thirst to produce and watch excellence. After nearly 20 years, Live Arts is entering adulthood with the challenge of defining ourselves with new leadership in the coming years. We welcome the opportunity.” ”

The C-Ville Weekly has an interview with John Gibson.

The Matchmaker at Live Arts

largematchmakerrev0.jpg

If the economy has you down, then a friendly farce might be just the ticket to cheer you up. This weekend, The Matchmaker opens at Live Arts and it promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. (Listen to podcast here) The Matchmaker was written by Thornton Wilder, the master of small-town America. He is usually more well known for his two Pulitzer Prize-winning plays of Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth. He also won a Pulitzer for his novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey. Conversely, The Matchmaker is not as well known to audiences as its musical adaptation, Hello Dolly! When writing The Matchmaker, Wilder was revisiting a past failure, his play The Merchant of YonkersThe Merchant of Yonkers premiered in 1938 and had a brief run. Wilder revisited the script several years later and expanded the role of a certain character, Dolly Gallagher Levi. The Matchmaker went on to become a Broadway hit. »Read More

Live Arts Presents Gore Vidal’s Visit to a Small Planet

small-planet.JPG

Live Arts has a unique treat in store for audiences! Visit to a Small Planet tells the story of Kreton, an alien from an unnamed planet who lands on Earth intending to view the American Civil War. He miscalculates and lands instead 100 years later. Having missed the opportunity to see conflict first hand, but delighted with all the new playthings the twentieth century has invented for war-making, he decides to create a war for himself.

Some highlights:

  • Finally, you’ll get to hear what your cat really thinks of you.
  • You’ll never look at bacon the same way again.
  • Relive those awkward sexual advances of your high school years.
  • If you weren’t already tired of the bureaucracy in the military, here’s a few more reasons.
  • Find out if there really is a media bias for creatures from another planet.
  • Because there’s no time like the present to undo all of those pesky alien stereotypes.
