Daily Progress’ Papa Lays the Smackdown on BookofJoe.com

Daily Progress’ holding company, Media General issued a “cease and desist” letter to BookofJoe.com.

Media General explains that BookofJoe must immediately remove all licensed content from its website. The letter explains that BookofJoe “cut and pastes” articles directly into its blog and that is a violation of copyright and terms of service.

What do you think? Will we (or another local blogger) be next? Are these rules even well defined? I’m sure BookofJoe referenced DailyProgress.

My thoughts on this are simple. Would Daily Progress prefer local bloggers to summarize articles and not link back to their site or do they want to be open with their content? Will the editors at Daily Progress use this as a story (haha, no)? How much traffic do you think BookofJoe is sending to Daily Progress? I know the DP writers read this site; but they probably can’t comment on anything which sucks.

(remember we keep all identities a secret!)

The C-Ville Weekly Does Something With Staples

[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/Vt91H7H87Xo” height=”350″ width=”425″ /]

The C-Ville just did some changes for a new publishing year. I’m happy.

Changes Summarized:

Stapled the Pages Together (THANK GOD)

News, Arts, Living: The 3 Sections

Bigger Font (if you add a wine section, you gotta appeal to the grey hairs so they can read it)

Do you like the changes?

Dear Cavalier Daily Staff Writers…

Thomas Jefferson had a lot to say about free press. Paying homage to their founder in the pursuit of democratic Truth, or relishing the unadulterated pleasure of writing provocative features and unpopular opinions for a circulation of 10,000 mostly unresponsive readers, or perhaps even contributing an occasional article so as to partake of the proverbial padding of the resume, the writers of the Cavalier Daily are… really good! As a civilian reader, I want students find new stories and voices, and represent them responsibly.

These stories may be worth taking a look at, too.

The C-Ville Weekly Makes Mountains Out of Molehills

Well, looks like we were named in C-Ville Weekly’s “Rapist Suspect Tried in the Media” article. Let’s examine the facts:

  1. We post “Rapist Caught!!!” and link to the WCAV and The Hook article, regarding the Rapist Suspect. We name no suspect and at the time no names had been released.
  2. Later that day, various news sources release the name of the suspect.
  3. We post “Innocent Until Proven Guilty” after finding that the name of the subject is released feeling surprised that every local media outlet happily named the suspect.

C-Ville Weekly’s account of these facts was:

Early reports ran the gamut. While the gossip website cvillain.com quoted stories from The Hook and WCAV under the headline “Rapist Caught!!,” the actual stories were framed a bit more judiciously…

While the more “judicious reponse” may have been to take advantage of the community’s infatuation with the WHO, we purposely don’t name names becaues that isn’t our style. We had no knowledge that the suspect would be named and that’s exactly the reason we gave warning to the community for overreacting to a “suspect.” Now, if that isn’t judicious, I don’t know what is. Hopefully our readers agree.

Or, maybe C-Ville Weekly is jealous of the Hook and the fact that they failed to break (potentially) one of Charlottesville’s biggest news stories. Read this for more background on the two papers.

Finally, I’d like to remind people that this site is open to commentary and open to posts. So, if you have another opinion you should make yourself heard.

Alright - Cville (Best of) vs. Hook (Arrested!)

So I think this week presents a great dichotomy for ye old “small town having two news weeklys and who’s going to survive(?)” debate. The fighters: Cville “Best” of Cville. vs. The Hook - “Arrested!”

Ads vs. news.

Who wins?

As of now, I’m not sure yet. But I really hope news.

So this week’s Best of C-Ville has drawn uncounted eyes due to its cover that panders to the ever hungry for drama Charlottesville community. The color scheme matching their blue box (not balls) and the “sex” etc. headlines draws passer-bys in in almost as much as that Paris Hilton cover about a year back (what does she have to do with Central Virginia again?). But you can’t judge a book by its cover can you? In this case, yes. But unfortunately once its opened, well that’s about it. Then when it comes to its Best of Cville ads, a ridiculous amount of ads are sold to those who win all of the categories (how do the companies already know they won so they can promote it in their huge ad before the issue came out?…)

Then comes The Hook. While they may be not exactly the “Bold Type (barf!),” they surely have something to say. And something to feel! They not only broke one of, if not the, biggest story of the decade, but also were able to get an in depth cover story within a day of the story breaking (by them!) And while I think it may not have been the most fair thing to print the “SUSPECT’S” (yes, I hope it’s really him too) mugshot on the cover, I surely would rather see him than Paris Hilton. Drawbacks: their paper is not as easy to clean up spilled coffee with at Mudhouse, and not quite as easy to wrap birthday presents with.

Ok, I assume you get the point. I’m Hooked.

…and yourself?

C-Ville Best of List in One Place in All Its Glory, Ready for your Attack!

Instead of clicking through one really long, difficult to navigate list, here is the summary (with our comments). 2007 brought some interesting winners for C-Ville’s Best of 2007. (Aqui Es Mexico didn’t win?!?!!?!?!?) as well as some expected ones (Happy Hour at McGrady’s). Also, Splendora’s again people, what are you thinking!? Charlottesville wants to hear your thoughts about missing categories, gripes, etc. Enjoy the list and comment!

cVillain = Top 20 “People” to Watch in Charlottesville?

Do you think The C-Ville Weekly would list cVillain.com for Top 20?

I think it’s a big stretch, but we are already getting some pretty good traction.  If you guys believe in us you could nominate us here.   Hey we don’t need the fame, but Charlottesville does need a destination site that is run by the community.  Maybe that’s a good reason to nominate us?  You are nominating the community.  Kinda like Time.  Just email:

cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks! cVillain rocks!

On another note, we are getting some interest in writing content for the site.  We welcome any participation in the site.  THAT IS FANTASTIC!  I love you guys and girls already.  There are basically no rules or specific requests for content.  We want stuff that distracts students and workers alike.  We want it juicy, raw and insightful.  Please no blatent marketing.  Register here and type away!

Thanks again… we are really excited about this site’s potential and we can’t make it a good site without your help.
