Hi all! I’m sure by now we’ve all heard about Plan 9 closing, I just
wanted to give everyone a heads up that their closing sale has
started, so it’s a good time to take advantage of that and show them
some love. Everything in the store is 20% off now through Friday,
and this Saturday only, it’s 30% off all new items, and 50% off all
used items–they’ll be open until Midnight, and if you spend $25.00
or more, you get a ticket to Satellite Ballroom’s last show for
$5.00! It’s a little sad to see these two staples go, so if you have
a chance to get over there this week I know both Satellite and Plan 9
would appreciate it!
I jacked the weekend preview to get revenge on Thor for stealing my Washington Post story. What’s the line? The Early bird gets the worm? Uck worms…which are certain to be out in full force after all this rain. Unfortunately, according to the weather forecast, this is not the last of it. Today is supposed to be rain with thunder and lightning (geee, thanks Thor). Tomorrow is calling for partly sunny with some rain. Sunday calls for rain, rain, and more rain. Don’t let the weather keep you in (unless there are tornado warnings, in which case only weather women should be out)…put on your red panties and check out some of what is lined up for the weekend:
2. Shaun broke the Modest Mouse show a full 10 days before it reached the other local publications. They are playing on June 29th, in case anyone was wondering.
3. They have a new cvilleMUSE category.. coming soon… LITERATURE.
4. They are launching a calendar.. yummy. It is going to rock the Charlottesville music, arts and entertainment world later this week (well, maybe not that cool). Oh, and you know that really difficult to navigate format? They’ve solved that. Oh, and you know that really difficult to get updated events into your calendar? They’ve solved that too.
Um, I can never beat Shaun to the punch. You are going to miss a lot of sweet stuff if you don’t read his preview over at cvilleMUSE. How do you like these apples? Van Halen (please don’t be canceled), Ryan Shaw, Birdlips and Friday’s After Five (with Eli Cook).
First Friday’s
How could you overlook Pinkie’s amazing preview on cvilleMUSE. She covers every single venue and every single artist, with links to boot! Apparently, there will be MUSE special ops walking around handing out business cards. Try to find them and tell them Thor sent you.
Off the Cusp
If MUSE always kicks my butt on real events at least I can find stuff off the beaten track. If you are a techno-mac-loving-uber-nerd, you should go to BeCamp, which is a part communist, part hippy part electronic festival of computers and crazy ideas like “FOAF,” “Grails,” “Parallel Computing,” “Selenium -web tier testing” and a bunch of other things that scare me.
Break out your Velcro puffy pants and hair gel! New Kids on the Block have just announced they are reuniting. My goodness, what are they thinking? They are old (Mark=still hot), they were not that good to begin with (I definitely threw Step-by-Step out at least 10 years ago), and more importantly the days of gay boy bands has passed (thank goodness). The band announced they will intend to come up with all new material…really? Can you see them competing with Usher or Justin Timerlake (who hello, left a boy band). I could also be way off base, they could become so popular they end up back on Saturday morning cartoons (hahahahaha).
The article below claims the fan response is good…but who the heck are “the fans”? The gist, this is not one of Mark Wahlberg’s better ideas. (If you happen to be Mark and reading this post, please don’t take any offense, I still think you are the hottest man in America).
“The fan response to this has been incredible,” band member Donnie Wahlberg told the Boston Herald.
Wahlberg said he was convinced to get back together with his former bandmates — Joey McIntyre, brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood — when they decided to record new music. Wahlberg said he wrote 80 percent of the new material with McIntyre and Jordan Knight.
A little birdie who recently moved to Fredericksburg reports:
Last night I was talking with some local restaurateurs, and found out that a local business owner, Chris Dunbar, has bought Starr Hill. It will be a restaurant and music hall. They already have a show booked (dark star orchestra) and should be opening by midsummer.
So the C&O crowd made for standing-room-only with a live band and an older crowd, while the young ‘uns at South Street mustered a few pints with many an empty bar seat? What the eff? I’ve heard tell of South Street’s Tuesday draw. What gives?
Generational war? (Fight! Stop spending our Social Security! We need beer money!)
Post-St. Patrick’s Day lull? (Perhaps, but blaming the Irish is like sooooo 1850.)
Slow night in the ‘ville by my account—minus the C&O; I’ve been hearing good things about the live music there. Keep it up! (And no knock on South Street; I blame lily-livered cVillains.)
A bit late to the party on this one, and I think I know who to blame: They Might Be Giants, whose rockin’ tunes inspired me to pour an immeasureable volume of beer into my face last night. Their show at the Satellite Ballroom was, hands down, one of the funnest shows I’ve ever seen in Charlottesville.
Halfway through the show, a little birdie leaned over to me and said, “I’ve never seen so many nerds in one place.” So true! Here’s to nerd rock, and the purveyors and consumers thereof.
I espied at least one other cVillain there. Who else went? What did you think?
Ok, for all the DJs and music lovers out there… I recently read shenanigans comment about a DJ floor in X-Lounge.
Ummm, X has no dance floor. Hellloooo-sy. When it was the Flower Market, they had a cool dance floor that had little red lights that flashed. That french guy from Fleurie used to bust some funky moves up on that shit. My dance floor dream? Someone get a floor that’s like the bar top at Ten with the touch-sensor lights…
Sure, the lights in the Ten bar are pretty sweet, but you know there are some amazing technologies out there. I’ve put together some cool videos showcasing lighted DJ Dance Floors, a “collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface,” and some other really cool shizzle. A lot of it comes from the MIT Media Lab. Check it out after the break.
