The last few days have consisted of some really strange news stories:
Bat-Killing Cave Fungus has caused the Commonwealth to issue a warning against human spelunking, i.e. exploring caves. The fungus, called “white-nose syndrome” has already killed hundreds of thousands of bats. [WCAV]
Did you know that a Lynchburg inmate escaped from a rope he made out of bed sheets. Doesn’t that only happen in the movies? He was captured in Atlanta. [WCAV]
A 22 year old PVCC student is trying to get on City Council. Dude, don’t sell your soul so early! You have to wait until you are at least 30. Either way, you are badass. [NBC29]
Hoskeletor’s father, Halsey Minor is bidding $200 million for the Preakness race track. WTF. [UNCUS]
If you are stealing cattle from your neighbor, it’s probably best to not auction it at the local livestock auction. [UNCUS]

Example of Sikh Headscarf
Apparently on Saturday night the X-Lounge’s dress code prevented a Sikh student from entering the bar. We contacted the X-Lounge and asked for a response. We have posted their response and the complaint below…
Apology from X-Lounge:
To the entire Charlottesville Community:
An unfortunate mistake in judgment was made on Thursday, March 26 at approximately 1AM when a Sikh student from UVA was refused admission to our establishment, THE X LOUNGE, because he was wearing a turban, a symbol of the young man’s religion. »Read More

That’s right. According to the “news,” Charlottesville has “discovered” $3.6 million in unspent money. Given the hard economic times and the fact that Charlottesville faces a budget deficit in the near future, why would Charlottesville discover THREE POINT SIX MILLION DOLLARS? I can imagine the conversation:
City Accountant One: Bob, I was counting the city marbles and it looks like I miscounted over the last years.
City Accountant Two: Jim, oh that’s nonsense. What are we talking about here? Rounding errors?
City Accountant One: Well Jim, maybe I’m getting old, but I’ve double-entried everything and it looks like we are off by about THREE POINT SIX MILLION DOLLARS.
City Accountant Two: Heart Attack.
Seriously, how do you not know about $3.6 million?
What should Charlottesville do with the "discovered" $3.6 million?

In addition to the recent rumored sale of Java Java (too many coffee shops and too many wine places in Charlottesville?), we heard Crush is trying hard to be sold. Birdie explains:
The owner didn’t go into much detail about it, but it’s definitely sad, considering it’s a great wine shop. I don’t know if this is old hat, but it was news to me.
How does this relate to our favorite wine connoisseur’s departure? Anyone recall the “scariest food business from our 2007 superlatives?”

Well, if you remember our friends who allegedly stole beer from a cooler at Club 216, you can now forget them. They have been found not guilty because there was not enough evidence to convict them. The argument used against them (I am not kidding) : “they didn’t offer to pay when they were met by security.” I have no idea what this means, but it sounds like a lame reason to arrest people.

Community leaders met today to update the public on the progress of the 50-year Community Water Supply Plan and to outline the findings of the initial underground survey work done in preparation for the construction of a larger Ragged Mountain dam. The plan, approved by the Boards of the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) and the Albemarle County Service Authority as well as the elected bodies of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and the City of Charlottesville City Council, calls for a dam to be built at the Ragged Mountain reservoir to replace two older dams to increase the area’s water capacity and meet future community needs.
The remaining major components of the plan include a new pipeline between the South Fork and Ragged Mountain reservoirs that will replace the aged Sugar Hollow Pipeline, rehabilitation or replacement of aged piping, pumping, and treatment systems, and expansions to water treatment capacity. The plan provides improved stream flows to area rivers, preserves 75,000 feet of stream with wide buffers in a permanent conservation easement, provides 200 acres of new forest and four acres of new wetlands, avoids impacts to endangered species and preserves habitat and enhances water quality for the Buck Mountain watershed.. As the public process evolved this plan was considered to be the most responsible solution to providing an adequate and healthful water supply to City and County residents for many decades to come and has subsequently been determined by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to be the most environmentally- friendly and practical option available.

On Friday, Charlottesville and the Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society had a commemoration to remember the painful racist events that shutdown Venable and Lane schools 50 years ago. The story is pretty ugly; in 1958, schools closed for 5 months as Virginia protested Brown v Board of Education. With the support of Harry Byrd (pictured above) Virginia’s General Assembly passed the infamous “Massive Resistance” laws which allowed Virginia to shut down any school which still was attended by blacks and whites.
It’s good to put this in perspective; 50 years isn’t that long ago.

We have two small bits of restaurant news for you.
First off, Aqui Es Mexico has relocated right next door. Having replaced the payday loans business which used to be in the same shopping center, the restaurant grew about three fold. The menu and food stay the same, but be prepared for a much nicer dining experience and an even smaller chance you will have to wait for a table. Uber ambiance points!
Secondly, a birdie told me that the Escafe dance floor has all the whizz bangs, gizmos and bloopies you could ever want. I did not get a chance to do a closer inspection, but from the description, it was “totally discified,” complete with bright lights, strobes and the works. Unfortunately, it’s still separated from the bar area. Question: will the average dancer cross the threshold, attracted by the bright lights and thumping base, or is it too much of an abyss?
