Is the Hangover Gone Already? Artini Stuff

I think I just recovered from Artini. That’s right, the party thrown by a bunch of artists knocked me out for over 48 hours. And… it wasn’t just the booze.

The hosts completely decked out the IX building with custom paint jobs, 2 story drapes, strategic lighting, white lounge furniture, a ginormous dance floor, bikini adorned cocktail waitresses, fire breathing dancers and much more. I didn’t feel like I was in Charlottesville and it was awesome. I’ve been trying to find pictures on Flickr, but nothing is up yet (except this one from Outskirts). I’m sure that the photographers and skilled writers will do a better job solidifying the memory.

Despite it’s awesomeness, Artini did have a few problems.

They ran out of the majority of drinks by 11:30

I heard from several independent sources (because we are a serious news source) that both the VIP and normal section had problems with drinks. Maybe the bartenders finished everything before the attendees could, or maybe it was a well executed sobriety tool. Either way, something went awry. Consider our approach to the bar circa-Midnight…

Us: [looking at a very drunk bartender creating a wonderfully random concoction] What do you have left?

Her: This.

US: What is that?

Her: Um…[looking at us very confused]

US: Ok, we’ll take it.

The IX Building Won’t Be the Venue Next year

*Tear* Rumor on the street is that the current owner will be renovating the space. Is it the IX project? Who knows, but our hostess did make an announcement that made me think the IX wouldn’t be available next year.

The DJ Had Rave Tendencies

Don’t they say de musica non est disputandum? They don’t. I was disappointed in the DJ due to his poor transitions and relatively bad music choice. Of course, no one noticed because the Martinis were so good, but next year let’s have a more consistent group of good songs and someone who knows how to smoothly move from song to song.

Overall Artini Was an A+

I’m just a bitcher and everything about Artini was great. Thank you very much to Second Street for throwing what I believe will be Charlottesville’s Best Party of 2007. Cheers! Share your stories!

Non-Prom Costumes for cVillains who love the 80s

uhf

Costume ideas for this Friday’s Planned Parenthood 80s Prom:

Stanley Spadowski from UHF: Kramer, pre-Kramer. And you can probably get away with walking around saying, “Badgers? We don’t need no stinkin’ badgers!” even though Stanley didn’t say it. (His lines were way too weird for party quotes.)
Phyllis Nefler from Troop Beverly Hills: If you still have your Girl Scout uniform, or you own a “naughty scout” Halloween costume, you can similarly walk around saying, “Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!” even though Phyllis didn’t say it either. Even better– do the Freddie!
Richard Simmons: You could get some play for pulling this off. What better way to tell women that you’re confident and have a hot bod? Just don’t do the Freddie.
Any member of the Cosby Show cast: I still watch it on Nick at Nite, too! It’s great because about halfway through, I remember the episode, sort of, or I think I do. Now that’s quality TV with family values. Those definitely don’t exist anymore, so this costume would really throw people off.
Balki Bartokomous from “Perfect Strangers”: Everybody loved Balki!
Mikhail Gorbachov: He was Time’s Man of the Year! Great for those with receding hairlines, politicos, men who own suits…
Kylie Minogue: Tell the adults from the children at the party. If they haven’t heard of the Loco-Motion, OUT! And oh by the way, do you remember the Cosby show episode where Vanessa does the Loco-Motion wearing a skimpy top? I do! Costume!
He-Man or She-Ra: They were HOT cartoon superheros! His hair is so… pretty! And so is hers! These costume would be really involved, but again, you would be the life of the party. Everyone wants to be with a superhero.
Nolan Bushnell: You can wear whatever you want. All you have to say is, “He like totally invented Atari, man. How did you not know that?”

ArTiNi update

I’ve heard that Artini tickets are selling out, but I checked www.secondstreetgallery.com and they’re not gone yet. Participating restaurants are already offering their submissions on their cocktail menus, and the competition is deliciously fierce. If you are not going to Artini, please do yourself a favor and visit OXO right away. Their sweet and spicy Artini, the David Hockney, is one of the most enjoyable and creative concoctions I’ve ever had (and I drink a lot, if you haven’t noticed). Expect a perfect balance of grapefruit, honeydew, and jalapeno. You may not expect it, but OXO’s cocktail menu is already among the best downtown. I prefer their agave margaritas to Continental’s, and they take gin martinis –the real thing– very seriously. Maya’s Murano Artini is going to be a strong competitor, too. Its aqua color and fruit blend make for a refreshing summer cooler. I hope they do more with the garnishes at the party, though, given what I’ve seen elsewhere: a slice of canned pear, or even a gingered pear candy, would be more interesting than an orange. I’ve had Blue Light’s Peach Period, and it struck me more as a champagne cocktail than a vodka one. This, Absolut will not like. Kiki’s Georgia O’Keeffe is not unlike the Wedding Cake, a vanilla vodka and pineapple juice martini I’ve had with both DisAronno and Frangelico. It’s not bad, it’s just not going to be the Jean Miro of the event.

Have you had any Artinis?

Upcoming: House Arrest Party

I highly recommend this event for anyone interested in the often-unseen side of Charlottesville– the very large international refugee community that exists here. If you’ve seen the movie Beyond Rangoon, which is a heartbreakingly awful, great film, you know.

One of the local Burmese men has been attacked, beaten, and robbed by masked persons while riding his bicycle home from work at night on Cherry Avenue. Is it possible that there are people like that living in this “peaceful” town? Does racism and violence HAVE to seethe beneath every surface? The man comes half way around the world to escape a terrorist regime, only to be treated like this in our “free” and “civilized” society?? Pathetic.
