Coffee Party Gets Down To Business, Encourages .Gov To Follow Suit

Tomorrow, the first meeting of the Coffee Party chapter of Central Virginia will be gathering downtown at Rapture, Wednesday, 2 March 2010 at 7:30pm.  The guest speaker will be Eric Byler who heads up the greater Virginia Coffee Party movement.

If you’re unaware, the Coffee Party is a nationwide group that seeks a higher level of dialog that acknowledges that the government is not the enemy, but that we, the people, are the government.  Their mission statement is. . .

MISSION: The Coffee Party Movement gives voice to Americans who want to see cooperation in government. We recognize that the federal government is not the enemy of the people, but the expression of our collective will, and that we must participate in the democratic process in order to address the challenges that we face as Americans. As voters and grassroots volunteers, we will support leaders who work toward positive solutions, and hold accountable those who obstruct them.

Both the NYTimes (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/02/us/politics/02coffee.html) and the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/25/AR2010022505517.html) have covered the on-going phenomenon.  Going from 9,000 Facebook fans on Friday to around 52,000 today, it’s quickly picking up momentum.

Anyone may attend and everyone is encouraged to do so.  [Info]

Joe The Plumber Asks For Your Attention, Money, & Yogurt

Joe ‘The Plumber’ Wurzelbacher will be in town Friday (01/08) to aid in the campaign for Laurence Verga, an opponent of Congressman Tom Perriello.  The Charlottesville leg of the Virginia tour is scheduled to take the corner by storm, by appearing outside of Arch’s Frozen Yogurt during the evening.  Tickets should only set you back a cool $25.  A possible record deal may be in the works for Joe as well.  If interested, please check out his website, SecureOurDream.com (unfortunately it appears to be down currently).

If anyone attends, please e-mail us a copy of the pics.

Drunken Journalism and Israeli Obama Smashing

The following is a video that’s been getting a lot of press recently. Titled “Feeling the Hate in Jerusalem on the Eve of Obama’s Cairo Address” it spews raw, drunk and incendiary commentary towards Obama and makes you wonder about how the world really thinks about Obama. At the same time, it’s a bunch of drunk kids whose views are now visible for the entire world. Is it journalism? I’d wager yes, but then again, I just wear blue spandex tights and wave a giant hammer around all day.

Remember video is not safe for work…

What do you think (not an opportunity to turn into greens vs oranges)?

If You Wear Political Paraphernalia To Election Day in Virginia, You Face Misdemeanor Charges

WHAT THE F*CK, VIRGINIA.

I’m sorry, I never use four letter words in a post, but this guideline is absolutely ridiculous. You can’t wear Obainlinden promotional stuff near polls, according to Election Day officials.  The Daily Progress reports:

Election Day workers in Charlottesville and Albemarle County have been told to ask voters wearing political clothing or a button to either cover it up or remove it. The move is part of a newly clarified state guideline that bans all such exhibitions of campaign material at Virginia’s polling places.

Two Charlottesville-based groups along with the Virginia ACLU said Wednesday that they will sue over the policy, asserting that it is a violation of free speech.  If the voter does not agree to cover or remove the political apparel, the poll workers must file an incident report with the commonwealth attorney’s office for possible prosecution.  Even if a voter refuses to remove his campaign button or T-shirt, he will still have the opportunity to vote.   “No one will be refused the right to vote for violating this policy,” said Rick Sincere, chairman of Charlottesville’s Electoral Board.

So, what does the law actually say?  Specifically, Virginia § 24.2-604 explains»Read More

Propaganda mailing hits mailboxes in Cville

Obsession DVD, courtesy Megabee

It’s been an exciting week – I got my first political phone poll AND I got my first-ever racist propaganda mailing today.

I recieved my very own copy of “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West” in my mailbox today.  This is clearly meant to incite fear and hate into the swing voters of Virginia; I haven’t quite decided what to do with mine other than mail it back with a simple “take your hate and shove it” letter. Maybe I’ll mar the DVD too so they can’t reuse it.

Did you get a copy today? Join the mailback! Tell us what you’re including in the envelope!

Are You a Socialist?

All I keep hearing from people these days (1 person+mainstream media), is that Obama is a socialist blablalba, and if anyone supports him, by virtue of logic (if a=c and b=c, then a=b) you are also a socialist.  Apparently the Communist Party USA is not very happy with this comparison, so the folks at the Chicago Tribune decided to look into the matter further:

Generally, it involves espousing government control over a country’s basic industries, like transportation, communication and energy, while also allowing some government regulation of private industries.

“Obama is about as far from being a socialist as Joe The Plumber is from being a rocket scientist,” said Darrell West, director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution. “I think it’s hard for McCain to call Obama a socialist when George Bush is nationalizing banks.”

And this from Bruce Carruthers, a sociology professor at Northwestern University: “Obama is like a center-liberal Democrat, and he is certainly not looking to overthrow capitalism. My goodness, he wouldn’t have the support of someone like The Wizard of Omaha, Warren Buffet, if he truly was going to overthrow capitalism.”

Bottom line: pure capitalism and socialism can be a difficult mix.

So there you have it, once again politics proves no one can agree on anything. If cville were to become socialist, what would a government run cVillain look like? Would Thor be accused of rebellious acts against the government for writing about things no one else dares to? Would cocoNUT be hung for claiming one restaurant superior to another? Would Shenanigans be accused of having too much freedom of speech?  Would Parlie be deported back to Ireland for his anti-nationalistic fashion tendencies (if anyone remembers, please tell me the link where Parlie is in his leprechaun outfit)?

So lets have this as the official vote:

Tom Perriello Responds to Your Questions, Virgil Goode Does Not

Virgil Goode Did Not Respond

Tom Perriello Did Respond

Thanks for submitting questions for Perriello and Goode. Originally, we had told both campaigns that we wouldn’t publish their responses unless the other candidate also submitted responses in order to maintain our neutral political position.

After a phone call with a very unreceptive and unhelpful representative from the Goode office who explained to me that “maybe, we would look at the questions, but we get a lot of requests and Virgil is very busy” I realized that there was no way Virgil would answer the questions. Do you remember the TV debate cancellation?  The point is Virgil Goode’s lack of response indicates he  doesn’t care about speaking to the 5th district, and certainly, given our demographic, doesn’t care about speaking to the younger members of the 5th district.  I changed my mind about requiring responses from both candidates.

In case you didn’t know, Perriello is challenging six-term Republican congressman Virgil Goode. According to wikipedia, Perriello is calling for a restoration of America’s commitment to the “common good.” He has twice broken fundraising records for the district and out-raised Virgil Goode in 2007 and the first quarter of 2008.

The Perriello campaign was very willing to answer these questions and I’m happy to publish them. The questions were reader-submitted for the most part.  Thank you for submitting questions if you did.  I think we got all of them.  We asked the questions via email, gave each candidate 5 days to respond and told them to keep their answers short and to the point.

We’ve asked Tom and Virgil about national security, the economic crisis and most least importantly, tartare and aioli.  We made minor edits to the original questions and added a few of our own.  Tom’s responses are all his own and are unedited.  You can find them after the break.

Virginia, Charlottesville and Albemarle County Voter Registration Up 7%, 10% and 7%, respectively.

Virginia Republican Democrat Politics Election 2008

According to the Virginia State Board of Elections, voter registration dramatically increased for our neck of the woods.  Specifically, we saw the following increases (%):

Virginia  - 348,978 New Registered Voters (up 7.13%)
Charlottesville City – 2,889 New Registered Voters (up 10.65%)
Albemarle County – 4,779 New Registered Voters (up 7.27%)

With most of Virginia seeing a 4 to 7% increase and the high probability that new voters are most likely voting Democratic, this bodes well for Virginia being a true battleground state.  Last election, Republicans won Virginia by about 260,000 votesReal clear politics already shows the Democrats pulling ahead in the polls, so this should be an exciting election.  Full results of new registered voters after the break.
