UrbanCross Takes Over Downtown for a Day of Madness

This past Sunday hundreds of cycling enthusiasts spent their day watching and racing in Charlottesville’s own UrbanCross.  Cyclocross, is a relatively new cycling sport that has gained massive popularity in the states in the past few decades after its birth in Belgium.

UrbanCross at Ix, in it’s third year, is Charlottesville’s urban take on this exciting (and frankly insane) sport.  Located in the vacant lot beside Blue Wheel bike shop off of Elliot Avenue downtown the 1.75 mile track leads brave riders winding up hills and stairs, through sand pits and over barriers all on bicycles.

Several races took place on sunday starting at 9 o’clock with novice riders, until the 2 o’clock elite riders race.  I got to not only watch some of my friends and relatives race but personally take a spin around the track during an intermission, which was like nothing I had ever done (and quite honestly terrifying).

Charlottesville is hosting another cross race on December 6th at Darden Towe Park, those who have not yet experienced this sport are definitely encouraged to stop by for a look at one of the most entertaining sports around.

Tom Perriello Responds to Your Questions, Virgil Goode Does Not

Virgil Goode Did Not Respond

Tom Perriello Did Respond

Thanks for submitting questions for Perriello and Goode. Originally, we had told both campaigns that we wouldn’t publish their responses unless the other candidate also submitted responses in order to maintain our neutral political position.

After a phone call with a very unreceptive and unhelpful representative from the Goode office who explained to me that “maybe, we would look at the questions, but we get a lot of requests and Virgil is very busy” I realized that there was no way Virgil would answer the questions. Do you remember the TV debate cancellation?  The point is Virgil Goode’s lack of response indicates he  doesn’t care about speaking to the 5th district, and certainly, given our demographic, doesn’t care about speaking to the younger members of the 5th district.  I changed my mind about requiring responses from both candidates.

In case you didn’t know, Perriello is challenging six-term Republican congressman Virgil Goode. According to wikipedia, Perriello is calling for a restoration of America’s commitment to the “common good.” He has twice broken fundraising records for the district and out-raised Virgil Goode in 2007 and the first quarter of 2008.

The Perriello campaign was very willing to answer these questions and I’m happy to publish them. The questions were reader-submitted for the most part.  Thank you for submitting questions if you did.  I think we got all of them.  We asked the questions via email, gave each candidate 5 days to respond and told them to keep their answers short and to the point.

We’ve asked Tom and Virgil about national security, the economic crisis and most least importantly, tartare and aioli.  We made minor edits to the original questions and added a few of our own.  Tom’s responses are all his own and are unedited.  You can find them after the break.

Submit Your Questions for Goode and Perriello!

I was talking with someone from one of the 5th District campaigns (i.e. Goode or Perriello) and they offered to do an online questionnaire for cVillain readers.  Here’s what we will do.  Let us know in the comments what questions you want asked.  If you like someone else’s question, put a @4 where 4 corresponds to the comment number to let us know you like it.

We’ll pick the best/most liked 10 and submit the same questiosn to each campaign, give them a week to respond and publish the answers on the site.

Goode vs Perriello: JELLO Wrestling!

Here is the video of the advertisement that Perriello has been trying to get the local television stations to remove because it is “libel.”  According to the Perriello campaign’s attorney (in a letter sent to TV stations):

We do not expect you [TV Station] to act as a censor, prejudging all advertisements that are offered to you, but we do expect that when you are confronted with clear proof that a particular advertisement is false, you will refuse to run the advertisement in question. You owe your viewers that much

What, politicians lie about each other?  Who knew?

The Realities of Dating in Charlottesville

Middle-aged White Women

You are the most numerous in the off-Grounds singles scene. But the white men your age are so happy to be finally divorced from you that they are dating anyone but you. If you want dating success be open to cougar-ing it up and boldly going for younger guys. You will be surprised at how open they are to a post-menopausal, baby-worry-free shag. Also, be open to dating black men. If you’re in any way plump, local middle-aged black men will love you. Get thee to church. Get thee to a drum circle.

Stuff White Charlottesvillians Like

white people charlottesville

[written by Uva LaGrape]

I found Stuff White People Like through a cVillain link a couple of weeks ago, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

I’ve been emailing the link to everyone I know. I’ve been reading all the knockoff websites. I’ve been angrily screaming out loud at the comments on the blog itself. Why am I so impassioned by this site?

Being a half-black, half-white woman has colored the way I view race. Everyday of my life, even at home, I am reminded of race. I’m privy to african-american cultures because even though I’m “half and half”, 99% of everyone puts me in the “Black” category. I’m privy to white cultures because I’m exposed to them via family. I occasionally even get to unintentionally spy into the “secret” white world, seeing how white folk act when black folk aren’t around because sometimes White people don’t realize that I’m part-black. Race is an aspect of life that I’m always observing and analyzing.

I think stuffwhitepeoplelike evinces such roars of joy from me is because it’s different than almost any other slice of American humor that makes fun of white people. »Read More
