2009 Best/Worst For CVILLE’S MUSIC SCENE

It’s certainly a busy, busy time of year, but there’s definitely time to recollect the highs and lows our local music scene has seen in ‘09. Here’s what comes to mind. We’d love to hear your thoughts!

1) iS Venue calls it quits after barely a year in operation, and while some great acts came through to play the joint, the crowd size and sound generally left people wanting.

     **Best or Worst?**

2) Holy Smokes Booking: Jacob Wolf came to town and hit the ground running last spring, booking and promoting awesome, refreshing music for Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, The Bridge PAI, The Garage & 12 Street Taphouse. I think this town owes a thank you to him for helping fight the good fight against jam bands and bluegrass. »Read More

Bel Rio Charlottesville Unofficial Menu Looking Yummy

We have the unofficial menu for Belmont’s newest restaurant, Bel Rio.  Unofficially, soups, salads and small plates are $5 to $10; big plates are $15 to $20.  The menu is not finalized, but it should give you a good idea of what’s in store. Word is the restaurant already has all the licenses and is waiting for the blessing from the health department. Expect it to open in about a week. Menu is after the break…

Bonjour Boheme!

Boheme is open for lunch Monday through Saturday, 11:30 to 2:30, dinner Tuesday through Saturday 5:30 until 10:30, brunch Sunday 11 to 4.

Starting after Valentine’s Day, you can stop in for small plates between 2:30 and 5:30 in the afternoon and from 10:30 at night until 1am.

And this, I absolutely love: they’re thinking about doing a Sunday Tea Dance with a DJ in the evenings, and afternoon tea service in the courtyard come spring.

Merci beaucoup to the (tres mignon) petit oiseau for this.

The Week in Review: 1/28/2008 to 2/3/2008

charlottesville[pic]

Ladies and Gentlemen, step right up for your week in review.

We got villains dissing on wine bars, gunshots at the Outback and some Grecian food. Don’t forget to stop around back to sample our smelly PR move, celebrity wannabies, and your favorite musical acts. When you leave, grab the gift bag– it’s full of tats, lawsuits, and monkey sex. Enjoy!

Places with TVs other than your house

In alphy order. This is a team effort post for Superbowl Sunday! Just because these businesses have TVs does not mean they’re open today– I’ve posted what I know, and whatever you know, comment and I’ll fill it in next to each restaurant/bar. You can also add to this.

Go team!

Beer Run Definitely open (right now). Superbowl food specials today, starting at 2. Closes when?
Biltmore Definitely open, but call to check if private parties booked it before showing up.
B-Dubs aka BW3’s Will be a PARTY.
Continental Divide Seems likely, but social Darwinism will apply to those 10 or so bar seats. Can we confirm that it’s open on Sunday?
Court Square Tavern With a beer list like that, it would be a shame to stop the world from guzzling it on Superbowl Sunday. (But I don’t know.)
Crush Doubtful. Not a Superbowl watching venue, but I hope you stocked up on Superbowl wine.
Downtown Grille Dinner is served on Sundays, but I make no promises for late night.
Kiki ?
Maya The bar is open on Sundays! You can go to brunch now, too.
McGrady’s A given.
Nook Closes by kick-off, but go for brunch right now!
Shebeen Open, seems likely.
South Street Brewery Not open Sunday.
Three. Open, seems likely.
X Lounge Not open Sunday.
West Main I’m sure they’re doing something…
Wild Wings Probably the unofficial Superbowl HQ of Charlottesville.
Zinc Not open Sunday.

Weekend events

You certainly have your options…

What is that smell? Oh yes, love IS in the air.

I was, admittedly, a bit surprised to learn from an earlier poll that many cVillain readers are married or in serious relationships. I just naturally assumed that anyone who derived perverse satisfaction from discussing aberrational sexual behaviors in haiku late into the night was single, too. I was mistaken, and so pleased to learn we are all freaks of nature together, every one of us. »Read More

The Week in Review: 1/21/2008 to 1/27/2008

Besides the lovely complexity of having too much wine this week, we break the story on Pink Paintballs, (hopefully) find a restaurantuer a chef partner, chat with bartenders and break a rumor of a high end steak place. Oh, we also make some rule.

The week in review continues below:
