The “Not So” New Deli

My wife and I were looking for a good place to get a sandwich on Saturday morning on our drive out to Lowe’s. We thought that we’d stop at C’ville Coffee. On the way there, we both simultaneously realized that our hangovers weren’t ready to sacrifice the fountain soda. Seriously, that was the deal breaker. So we kept driving. We ended up at the New Deli, a place we’d both been to separately, and sworn to its goodness.

I’ll admit, I’ve been there before and had not so impressive results. A Turkey Reuben I ordered one time came with very little meat, and lacked the slaw I had requested. But I could see the potential and went back. This time, I ordered a steak and cheese and the wife ordered a hot Italian. We spent the few minutes at a booth waiting for our sandwiches quizzing each other on the questions offered in the “Coffee News”.

The sandwiches arrived faster than we expected. Both were very tastey. My steak and cheese was great, Philly Style. The bread had soaked up a little of the leftover grease, but never fell apart. It had a good amount of mayo on it, but not the “Id of Jared” amount as parlie described. I was glad I upgraded from chips to the fries, which were not overcooked, lightly crunchy, and not-too-greasy and lightly peppered. Needless to say, we both ate the whole things, which was actually quite a task. I even tried to sucker my wife out of her pickle by telling her that mine was terrible. She didn’t bite. (all innuendos intended).

Anyway, I recommend this place if you are looking for a good change of pace to the chain subs around town. It’s not quite the New York style deli I had once hoped it be, but I’ll got there over subway or Quizno’s any day. And we even got our fountain sodas refilled in “to go” cups, when we left. On our way out, I inquired about how long it had been there. “Since 1984″ I was told. I don’t think much has changed since then, and I hope it doesn’t.
