Charlottesville Misrepresenting Car Crime Statistics?

From a reliable birdie…

Don’t know if this is blog worthy, but maybe something to share with friends to see if we can get the word out.  The news stations are reporting “a string” of car thefts around town this weekend.  The police spokesperson didn’t seem to give them an accurate picture of what happened.  Cars were vandalized and stolen along Park Street and into the Greenbriar neighborhood.  FIFTY would be a conservative estimate of the number of cars damaged. I have heard a few numbers, all higher than that.

2008 Charlottesville Crime Statistics

The skinny:  2008 saw essentially the same amount of overall violent and property crimes as 2008.  Violent crime was down slightly by 11%, but Charlottesville saw 5 murders in 2008 as opposed to 3 in 2007.  While the data is hard to really analyze, we highlight the following key changes from the 2007 to 2008 Charlottesville crime statistics:

  • burglary and breaking and entering decreased 30%, from 273 to 191 incidents
  • vehicle theft increased from 163 to 191 incidents or an increase of 19%
  • theft from building increased 17%, from 163 to 191 incident

One wonders if the economic crisis will increase crime in 2009.  Full statistics are after the break…

Crime Weekend of Irony

It’s not every weekend you get a bunch of crime news.  It’s also not every weekend where you read a Daily Progress article that explains crime is down 7% in Charlottesville and 3% in Albemarle County.  I guess the irony is appropriate. I could not find the statistics the Daily Progress was using, but if anyone knows, please point me in that direction.  The only report I could find was a “Crime in Virginia” article, but it didn’t include any historical data.

First, we started off Friday afternoon with a robbery of Greenberry’s.

Friday night, a 13 year old girl and a 29 year old man go missing.  It is suspected that he has kidnapped her and that they are in some sort of relationship.

Garcia was described as 5-feet-5-inches tall and 165 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. His vehicle is a white 2002 GMC Yukon with a license plate that reads “GERYLE.”

Garcia is also known as Eleno Garcia Jacinto [picture below]

The 13-year-old girl — whose name has not been released — was described as 5-feet-3-inches tall and 116 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

If you have any information, please contact the Charlottesville police.

Eleno Garcia Kidnapping

9:30 AM Saturday, over the hill, a man robs the Tractor Supply store and is caught.

At 2AM on Sunday, there was a shooting of a 20-year old man off of Ridge Street. His injuries were not life threatening.

1 in 15 Virginians Are on Food Stamps

Food Stamp Virginia

The Charleston Daily Mail reports that 1 in 6 West Virginians is on food stamps. Wild and Wonderful? Good golly.

And then I got to thinking, how many Virginia residents are on food stamps? Also, how many people in Charlottesville and Albemarle County receive food stamps?

I think everyone knows that West Virginia is the poorest state in the Nation, but where does little old Virginia and Charlottesville compare? The answers and details are below. »Read More
