10 Most Overrated Things About Charlottesville

overrated charlottesville ratings

We love Charlottesville, we really do.  But we also think it’s time to call out some overrated places, foods, scenes, etc in the area.  As always, these lists are totally subjective, but they do represent our writers best guesses as to what might be commonly accepted opinion.  There are so many awesome things about Charlottesville and you can read the rest of our blog if you don’t believe us.

Our list (in no particular order)… »Read More

Halloween Weekend Preview

halloween charlottesville

Thanks to your input for Halloween, we have a pretty scary list of things.  Overall, we expect this weekend to be insanely busy.  It’s homecoming weekend with a home football game, a film festival, hundreds of people coming in town for some historic society event (I still can’t find info on this) and then, oh ya, Halloween parties galore.

Weekend Preview: Grab Your Galoshes and Get Outdoors

Yup, it’s going to rain all day, tonight and Saturday. All of the big events planned for this weekend will probably suck, that is, unless you get your galoshes, your rain parkas and get outdoors. Things should clear up by Sunday, but will be a little mushy. Don’t forget to visiting MUSE and STYLE for more weekend events!

Charlottesville Vegetarian Festival

Saturday

Charlottesville’s 12th Annual Vegetarian Festivus [website]

Join a bunch of hippies celebrate animal superiority to humans! The festival is free, celebrates healthy lifestyles and has a bunch of food samples and should be pretty fun to attend. We doubt the claim that 6,000 people will show up, but if you go there, make sure you get a chance to visit as many booths as you can!

8 Things You Don’t Ask People Touring Charlottesville

Dont ask in charlottesville

I got inspired by this article I read about the Chinese posters that are describing the 8 things to not ask Olympic tourists.

The 8 Don’t Asks:

  1. Don’t ask about income or expenses,
  2. don’t ask about age,
  3. don’t ask about love life or marriage,
  4. don’t ask about health,
  5. don’t ask about someone’s home or address,
  6. don’t ask about personal experience,
  7. don’t ask about religious beliefs or political views,
  8. don’t ask what someone does.

Basically, they’ve told people to not make meaningful relationships with people.

What are the 8 things you don’t ask people visiting Charlottesville?  I’ll start…

  1. Don’t you hate DMB?
  2. Did you know that TJ had sexual relations with a slave?
  3. Did you know that no service workers can afford to live in Charlottesville?
  4. ________________________  your turn!

Things You Need to Know

Look, you need to know these things, so… read on…

On Thursday, you can attend an all day Government Services Fair on the downtown mall. While you won’t get to ride the Ferris Wheel, you can oodle at a bunch of local government agencies, goggle at various police and fire department vehicles (hopefully they bring the armored personnel carrier), watch the SWAT team kick ass and heckle some live debaters. If you are heading West Bound on I-64, you need to expect some traffic delays. VDOT is shutting down one of the lanes near milepost 108, just past Crozet. [VDOT]

Want to know what you are buying, where it came from and how to get locally made products? Check out Locallectual.com, which despite being a little confusing to navigate, gives shoppers the ability to track the social and environmental impact of their purchases. You get to participate in the discussion too. So head on over there and support local and ecologically friendly stuff. I’m sure the two local founders, Karen and Jessica would love to hear thoughts from you.

Order from Horder is shutting down. One of our keen birdies wanted to let everyone know that Order from Horder is having a 20 to 50% off sale. Now, the weird thing is that Order from Horder still has its website up… maybe they are doing internet only sales. Anyone know?
