This wine trick is amazing. Is it true? I don’t know but if it is, you will seriously impress your significant other. If it doesn’t work, you can drink the wine anyway and you still have better chances.
This message has been circulating to various people in Charlottesville:
Dear Friends,
It is with deep regret and heavy heart that as of August 15th I will no longer be a part of Crush Wine Shop. Crush has decided to take a different path, which will no longer include my services. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone I have had the distinct pleasure of serving. I have made many friends and acquaintances there. I will miss seeing daily my great fellow Belmontians but most of all; I will miss seeing everyone in the store and helping with wine choices and talking food. Thank you all for giving me the chance to be of service and I look forward to seeing you in the future…Oh yeah, if anyone knows of employment opportunities please let me know.
Gregg Oxley
It’s a pity. For those of you that don’t know, Crush hosted a non-elitist wine party for us and together with another villain was one of the originators of the red panties. Gregg, thanks for sharing wine with us, in humble fashion, and sharing in our cVillain pursuits.
We’ll miss you and hope you can find something else in Charlottesville!
Yes, the rumor is true (thanks Orchid). I am certain you have all heard or read something on this sad event.
Oakencroft is closing. You still have plenty of time to enjoy its wine and atmosphere. The winery is set to close December 31, 2008. Apparently after 25 years Felicia Rogan is ready to retire. Why no sale? She did sell the property, but the new owners don’t intend on continuing to use it as a winery.
You can always check out cvilleMUSE for your arts and music recommendations, but without further ado, I present to you things which will make your weekend better than swell. I actually really like looking around for exciting things to do, because there is cool and unique stuff every weekend. As always, let us know what we’ve forgotten.
As you may or may not know, there are a wide variety of low-end fortified wines available in the Charlottesville area. While none are locally produced, they all pack a particularly interesting wallop and are quite distinct in their own way. I managed to convince 6 Cvillains to be brave enough to help me evaluate them and determine which is the best. Here are the results.
I went shopping on Friday afternoon and hit two convenience stores to get the goods. At the Shell station on Preston I picked up the first 4 bottles - Night Train, Wild Irish Rose ‘Red’, ‘Wild Grape’, and ‘Wild Fruit’. When I put them on the counter at the register the cashier looked at me and said “Wow.” I replied that it was for science and she told me that if it was for anything else I was about to spend the next 2 days in the bathroom “both ways”. I hurried the plastic and paper bags back to my car before anyone saw the massive amount of fortified wine I was buying.
After a few more unsuccessful (re: they only sold REAL wine, like from a vineyard) stops I found a few more bottles at the Estes Market on Cherry Avenue. It was here that I bought Thunderbird, Cisco ‘Black Cherry’, and Wild Irish Rose ‘Green Apple’. There were a lot of varieties of Cisco, no doubt made with different grapes, but in order to limit the scope of this wine review (and be easy on my volunteer tasters) I elected to only sample the Black Cherry. I was surprised that none of these wines were as cheap as I’d expected. A 750ml bottle of each was $4.99.
Judging by the popularity of Charlottesville and Belmont’s new little jewel, The Local, many of you have already eaten there and like it. We’ve asked you what you think of The Local and published The Local’s Menu.
We’ve visited The Local several times in recent weeks and now it’s time for a formal review. If you peruse the menu, you will find that The Local has a very reasonably priced menu. It hits that $13 to $16 entre range that has driven a similar success to restaurants like Continental Divide.
When I dine out with my parents, I order the wine for me and my dad. He knows I will revel in it more than he ever could, and I know he will retract my open invitation to come home if I choose an expensive bottle. He even finds me to be quite reliable in choosing something we like. (To that, I say only this: Argentina.) He and I are positive individuals, so we approach unpleasant wine the way we approach Chanel No. 5: “Mmm, musk!” We don’t really discuss wine at too much length at the dinner table, because we have acquaintances we’d rather not sound like (and probably aren’t qualified to do so anyway).
Well everyone probably has Valentine’s Day plans, but in case you don’t here are some suggestions.
Me, I’ll probably just sit at home alone, think of new posts to write for cVillain and hope that everyone is having a good time. I didn’t really have a theme for these suggestions and I was trying to find singles non-lovey dovey stuff, but it’s hard. Charlottesville, your money is spent in couples on the 14th. It’s cool.
Anyway, here THREE events that caught my eye as well as THREE homemade solutions. If you are lazy, you will do a non-homemade solution, if you want serious plus points, do it homemade. Everything is local. Let me know what you think of the homemade ones and suggest your own!
Ladies and Gentlemen, step right up for your week in review.
We got villains dissing on wine bars, gunshots at the Outback and some Grecian food. Don’t forget to stop around back to sample our smelly PR move, celebrity wannabies, and your favorite musical acts. When you leave, grab the gift bag– it’s full of tats, lawsuits, and monkey sex. Enjoy!
I was, admittedly, a bit surprised to learn from an earlier poll that many cVillain readers are married or in serious relationships. I just naturally assumed that anyone who derived perverse satisfaction from discussing aberrational sexual behaviors in haiku late into the night was single, too. I was mistaken, and so pleased to learn we are all freaks of nature together, every one of us. »Read More
