Apparently we can find out exactly what kind of person we are just by looking at the bar tab for the evening. Screw the pills, the answer is in your drinks. RegretfulMorning.com ran this bar tab analysis post and they covered some important genres of bar crawlers, but what about the other people? I made a list of some typical tabs we might find around cville on a Saturday night:
South St. -25 to 30 something locals attended by one of their girlfriends…this could be described as a third wheel scenario
2 JP Ales
2 Satan’s Pony
1 Level Tonic
Mas -UVa undergrads trying to impress a girl for the night, but can only afford one bottle of decent red wine
1 Muga Rioja Reserva ‘02

…and then I woke up covered in milk duds and pina colada mix in the scoop of a backhoe, with no pants!
Oh hey everyone, I didn’t see you there. I was just explaining to some friends about what I did last night. More like, what I didn’t do! Oh man, what a ridiculous assortment of things to be unproud of, and feel hungover about. Let’s recap: »Read More

Behold the Zo Ca Lo Brunch Menu…
It’s very pricey. I think too pricey, maybe.
I will publish my review in the upcoming days, but have any of you been yet? What do you think?
Menu is after the break…

Alicia Keys said, “If I want to be alone, some place I can write, I can read, I can pray, I can cry, I can do whatever I want–I go to the bathroom”. I assume that she’s talking about the bathroom in her house, and not any of the public restrooms in Charlottesville, but for the moment, I will humor (probably only) myself and think that she could be applying this philosophy to say, Zinc. Or Maya. Or Mas.

This is the real deal, folks. If you disagree, you obviously have not the powers of the bearer of thunder and lightning, nor the gentle powers of a storm demon who brings death and disease to your village. »Read More

I returned to Zocalo recently to see if its menu might have changed for the season, and it has slightly. I suggest going back to the restaurant always, because the food, atmosphere, and service really do warrant status as Charlottesville’s favorite in the C-VILLE best-of poll for a third consecutive year (following best new restaurant in 2004). The menu has changed only slightly– the decision to add a butternut squash soup with lump crab was a very good one, and the decision to keep the rest of the menu mostly intact is a good one as well. Have you had the pork with fois gras sauce yet?
A long “specialty martinis” selection caught my attention, but I do not know how new they are. I highly recommend the Parliament, a sweet basil and lime flavored martini.
The most refreshing sight was a packed bar. I’ve always enjoyed Zocalo but tend to see it as more of a hot spot in the patio season. Not so, by the looks of it this weekend– the singles were out.

Good morning! I made a restaurant index manually, and it took me hours! Please enjoy!
One note: I will eventually attribute each review to the proper author. Right now, the reviews are all attributed to the author of the post they fall under. For example, if I wrote a brunch review as a post, and Thor posted a comment about a restaurant I did not mention, the link to Thor’s restaurant will still be attributed to me. I just wanted to get these posted! When you search for a restaurant on our site, it will search only the posts; a comment search must be done separately. This index is a composite of posts and comments…

Fridays after Five: I didn’t go inside, but it sounded… the way the Pavilion usually sounds when there’s a concert going on and I’m not there. I bet it was great, though!
Blue Light: If there was a “Best Of” category for “Best place to watch your social spheres slowly collide and destroy the distinction between personal and professional relationships that you have meticulously maintained for years,” Blue Light would win. Still a great bar!
X Lounge’s 80s party that wasn’t: cVillain heard the DJ didn’t show, and no one seemed too upset about it. X Lounge kept the dance floor open and threw a big dance party with house music instead. cVillain wants to know: why not do that every Saturday? Excluding inevitably long bar and bathroom waits, the party was awesome!
Wine tasting: cVillains love their wine, and the great press this summer left us with no excuse not to do some tastings. New arrival Flying Fox Vineyard has landed south of Veritas and Afton Mountain on Route 151. My favorite is King Family, located near Crozet. As long as the weather is fare, you can take in a polo match on Sundays against the mountain backdrop. The fine folks at Jefferson Vineyards throw big tasting dinners at very reasonable prices. (Get on the e-mail list!) And if you don’t want to leave the downtown mall, the Market Street Wineshop does complimentary tastings every Friday and Saturday at each location.
Wild Wing Cafe: $11 color-changing Coors buckets on Sundays. If only NASCAR hadn’t been rained out.
Zo Ca Lo: Winner of C-VILLE readers’ votes for Best Restaurant and Best Restroom, taking Best Restaurant a second year in a row, Zo Ca Lo is not resting on its laurels now. The unsung hero of the menu could be the pork with foi gras sauce, fingerling potatoes, and peach chutney. Before the menu changes, please treat yourselves to dinner. It’s an investment in a great memory.
You’re up. What else?

For everyone who was wondering why Zocalo stopped being crowded at midnight and why Blue Light looked like a Darden reunion last night…..Oxo opened its “late night lounge” last night and had quite a successful opening. All of Charlottesville’s regular lushes were out checking out this new venue right off the mall and the place was really hopping from 12a-on.
Notes:
-They do not have a soda gun, so you will actually get Canada dry club soda and tonic water that tastes great.
-People were actually dancing! They really need to get a better music selection but the Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson were great. If this takes off, there is actually a great area to dance and they would be well served by getting a DJ who knows how to get people dancing.
-Move the couch AWAY from the bar. On the most accessible side of the bar there was a couch you had to stand/lean/kneel on to order a drink. Other than the damage to furniture, this was just not a well thought out idea.
-The front porch is great. Good people watching and the addition of a “bouncer” who held the door for you and a waitress collecting glasses frequently was really nice. I only saw one glass get broken the whole night and this was cleaned up in about 5 seconds.
-The bar setup was clearly not setup for quick serving from rail or otherwise and they would be well served by getting someone in there to retool it so they move quicker. It looks pretty but if they get slammed, prepare to wait for a drink (but at least you won’t wait as long as you have to @ Zocalo now that Polo is gone..wow they have got some amateurs working now…anyways).
Anyways, as far as openings in the past couple of years that I’ve been to (X lounge, Maya, Ten, etc.), this was a huge success and hopefully they will do well with it. It would be great to have a nice new place to enjoy a libation and maybe (keep your fingers crossed) shake a little ass.
