ITV Emmerdale’s Mark Charnock teases Marlon Dingle and Rhona future in ‘never done before’ plot

Emmerdale is lining up explosive scenes as Marlon Dingle and Rhona Goskirk continue to struggle following a recent baby bombshell in the village.

Soap watchers will recall that Gus showed up in the village earlier this year, asking ex Rhona for her help. He revealed to her that he was in a new relationship and wanted to have kids with his new partner, Lucy, but they weren’t able to. Gus said he had kept the embryos they had frozen while together and wanted to use them but needed her permission, as she was the other parent of the embryo.

Rhona was left floored as she believed the embryos had been destroyed and after meeting Lucy, but contemplated letting them use the embryos before changing her mind. However, things took a dramatic turn last month when Rhona discovered that Lucy was heavily pregnant and Gus had used their embryos without Rhona’s consent, even stealing the latter’s passport to forge documents and fake her consent.

Things took another devastating turn when Rhona confronted the pair with Lucy going into labour early. Later, in the hospital, it was revealed that Lucy had died while giving birth due to complications and the baby girl, Ivy, was in intensive care. Rhona has been struggling with the aftermath and, on Tuesday’s episode, it was revealed she had been secretly visiting Ivy in hospital, leaving Marlon furious and concerned for his own family.

In upcoming scenes, Rhona’s mother Mary Goskirk grows increasingly concerned as it’s clear Gus is reaching his absolute breaking point as a single grieving dad with baby Ivy. And Rhona’s jaw drops when Mary arrives home with Gus and Ivy in tow with Marlon equally surprised when he sees his new house guests. The next morning, Rhona tries to keep the peace but it’s clear Marlon is lacking patience for the new visitors…

Talking about the storyline, Marlon actor Mark Charnock teased what is to come on the hit ITV soap. The actor, who has played Marlon since 1996, told the Mirror and other press: “From Rhona’s point of view, she has this undeniable biological connection [to the baby] that she can’t deny.

“Marlon, has finally got to a place where after all this searching he’s finally got this perfect family unit. He’s been very ill, he’s got past that, and finally they’re in this place we can move forward now. And then this thing happens.

“Even though he worships the floor she [Rhona] walks on, he’s going to find it really hard to resolve himself to her obsession. I’m not even sure this story has been done before this way and it feels like we’re on the cusp of something.

“The cracks on the ice are going to form and go in all sorts of different directions. The possibilities for this story are endless. It’s thrilling to be a part of it and to see where it could go.”

Teasing Marlon and Rhona’s future, he said of whether they can survive the bombshell: “I think so. Who knows? We haven’t had the scripts yet, I might find out next week that they’re not!

“I would hope that they’ve both been through so much each individually that you’d thing being together now they’d be stronger. But something like this is so heavy and so divisive and almost impossible to imagine the connotations of it. There could be any outcome to this story.

“I think Marlon wants what’s best for her, but he’s scared of what having that baby in their lives might mean.”
