One such incident sees Marlon storm out of the house, with Charnock revealing to Digital Spy and other media that his character isn’t exactly best pleased with the current arrangement in his house.

“He’s not happy. At Christmas he agrees to let them stay because Gus is all over the place, he’s on the verge of a breakdown it seems,” began Charnock. “The baby doesn’t stop crying, and Gus is all over the place for obvious reasons.

“To have them for Christmas is a huge act of will on his part to accept that. While he will say that he accepts it, it’s like somebody’s just detonated a bomb in his world. It’s kind of like it’s nothing to do with him, but it’s everything to do with him.

“It is weird having one of her ex-husbands in the house, for obvious reasons. Again, he doesn’t feel threatened by that but it’s just weird. Dramatically, it’s brilliant. The potential is just limitless, really – it could go in any direction.

“You won’t be surprised, Marlon’s quite precious about cooking Christmas dinner and Gus likes to cook – so you can imagine [his anger]. There’s a lot going on! It’s a mess, actually. It’s an emotional and moral mess, which is great.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
