Emmerdale aired a devastating car crash tonight – leaving one of the Dales’ teens dead.

The ITV soap showed some heartbreaking scenes this evening when Heath Hope died after a car crash on the way to a party in Hotten. Having been banned from going to a party, Cathy decided to steal Wendy’s car and head out into the back roads of the Dales to the New Year’s Eve party, with her twin brother Heath and friend Angelica in tow.

However, there were disastrous consequences for the family when the car ended up veering off the road in a shocking collision, leaving Cathy and Angelica with terrible cuts and bruises to their faces.

Heath, though, was dealt a much worse fate and in sad scenes, Wendy tried to perform CPR on him with no avail. Terrified, Bob realised what was happening – and that he had lost his son for good.

In sad scenes, he cradled Heath’s body as Wendy admitted there was nothing more she could do and that Heath had died. He doubled over in distress, sobbing as the faint sounds of the ambulance appeared in the distance.

When the paramedics arrived, they rushed them all to hospital – and whilst Bob kept a vigil outside Cathy’s room, it was clear he was struggling with the death of his son Heath, with him understandably struggling to cope.

Speaking about working with Cathy and Heath actors, Gabrielle and Sebastian Dowling, Tony Audenshaw – who plays Bob Hope – said: “It’s been brilliant. I think it’s quite extraordinary that they’re real twins and they’re playing real twins. They’re fabulous kids.”

Discussing the shocking joyriding scenes, he added: “He can’t believe that they’ve done it. It’s unclear, actually, whether he knows that Cathy can drive or not. I think he’s more concerned. Obviously because of the nature of what’s happened in the last few months a lot of behaviour has been tied in with Cathy’s PMDD… So he’s concerned, I think, more than anything.”

Tony says Bob is full of regret and wishes he would have just given him a lift. He said: “As a parent myself, it can be awkward sometimes giving your kids a lift or picking them up late at night. Had he just thought, ‘Well I can give you a lift,’ then it might have panned out differently. They wouldn’t have taken the car. It’s as simple as that, really.”
