ITV Emmerdale legend feels ‘constant pressure’ as Charity and Mack split teased

Emmerdale actress Emma Akins has opened up on Charity Dingle's future with on-off lover Mackenzie Boyd as the dynamic duo are left in danger over the Christmas period

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has teased her character Charity Dingle’s future with on-off lover Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) as they take centre stage in a gripping Christmas storyline.

Mack gets abducted and held hostage over the festive period after rowing with Charity and he warns her he won’t be back anytime soon. He may regret his choice of words as he soon gets kidnapped and finds himself held captive in an abandoned factory.

As Charity is convinced that Mack is still angry with her, there is a chance that she may not realise anything is wrong before it’s too late. A teaser synopsis released reads: “Inside the dark, gloomy factory, there’s no sign of Mackenzie, just the chair he was once bound to”.

Mackenzie’s love triangle with Charity and Chloe Harris (Jessie Elland) has gripped viewers for the best part of 2023, however, as Mack decides to give this relationship another go with wife Charity, will Chloe let them live happily ever after in the village?

Speaking to Daily Star and other press, Emma said: “They’ve been through so much and they are plastering over that is going on underneath. If he doesn’t stay with Charity he’s ripped apart his family with Chloe and their son Reuben and if he stays with Chloe and Reuben he’s not with the person he originally fell in love with so they’ve decided to suck it and see and go with it with real gusto but of course, something is always looming when Chloe and Reuben are in the village.

“There’s that constant pressure as a couple now because Mack is saying he’s going full steam ahead with the Charity relationship but means what relationship, if any, is he going to have with Reuben? and of course ,Mackenzie wants a relationship. I think love is blind. Chairty is crazy about Mackenzie and she’ll do anything to make sure he’s OK. That’s one thing they’ve got in common but they are out to be there unconditionally and that’s where moral compass goes out of the window.”

During Super Soap Week which aired in October, Mack saved Charity’s life over Chloe’s following a clifftop showdown and Emma went on to to gush over Charity’s relationship with Mack and that she’ll always be in debt to him now.

The soap star, who has played Charity since 2000, revealed: “I love working with Lawrence so I think they are better together because they were brought together through mischief, fun and mayhem and there was this element of one-upmanship and it just had this sparky-ness which I love doing as an actor with my fellow co-star so that element I don’t want to ever disappear even though they are going to be a couple.

“Sometimes in soap you put a couple together and they can just go ‘bluh’ so I think we create that nice energy. The feedback is people seem to love them together but conflict is more interesting in soaps so I think there’s enough scope to have conflict in the future.

“We see her revisit the moment he saved her a lot. I think it does stick out as this moment that this one person was there for her in her moment of near-death so I think she does hold on to that. I think that is a deep feeling of trust. She keeps saying it’s instinct but of course, if he could have saved both of them he would have.” Fans will have to wait and see if Charity gets to Mack in time and if the couple enter 2024 as a couple or apart.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
