New Doctor Who Companion’s Backstory & Major Season 14 Storyline Teased By Showrunner

Doctor Who season 14 showrunner Russell T. Davies teases the backstory for the Fifteenth Doctor's new companion, Ruby Sunday, who will debut soon.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies teases Ruby Sunday’s backstory and a major plot arc for season 14. Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson, will be the new companion of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who season 14. She will make her debut on the show for this year’s seasonal special, which releases on December 25.

Speaking with SFX Magazine, Davies offers more details about Ruby’s backstory. He reveals the Doctor Who Christmas special – titled “The Church on Ruby Road” – is “unashamedly the story of Ruby.” Davies confirmed that while Ruby is “named after the church on Ruby Road,” not every question will be answered in the special episode but rather will be traced throughout the season. Check out the full quote from Davies below:

“It’s unashamedly the story of Ruby, it’s called ‘The Church On Ruby Road’ because that’s where the church is where Ruby was left as a baby in 2004. So, she’s named after that church. She’s a foundling, so no one knows who her mother or father is. She was named after the church on Ruby Road.”

“Not every question is answered in the Christmas special and that continues all the way through to the most magnificent finale ever shot on planet Earth. No hype! I swear that’s true.”

How Ruby Sunday Could Be A Unique Companion in Doctor Who Season 14

The new character details leave a myriad of exciting possibilities for Doctor Who season 14. Introducing the Fifteenth Doctor alongside a new companion, the upcoming season will have the opportunity to establish brand-new character dynamics. If what Davies is claiming in the quote pans out, Doctor Who season 14 will put particular emphasis on the Ruby side of this dynamic.

The Doctor Who holiday special, “The Church on Ruby Road,” airs on Christmas Day.

Ruby Sunday is also an intriguing character as she stands apart from some of her companion predecessors. Born in 2004, the character is only 19 years old, making her the youngest Doctor Who companion. Gatwa, at 31, is also one of the younger actors to debut as the Time Lord, so between him and Ruby Sunday, the show can bring a uniquely youthful energy to this particular Doctor-companion relationship.

How Old Every Main Doctor Who Companion Is

From Susan to Yasmin, there have been a lot of Doctor Who companions. Ruby Sunday will be the youngest, but companion ages have varied widely.

Ruby’s youth can also combine interestingly with her status as a “foundling.” Still a teenager, the fact that her parentage is unknown could lead to an interesting coming-of-age narrative for Ruby, which further breaks new grounds for the sci-fi show. This storyline will be kicked off soon as Doctor Who airs its Christmas special before the start of season 14.
