A Texas high school football player has been crowned homecoming king one year after he was seriously injured in a football-related incident.

Cooper Reid sustained a severe head injury while playing in Troup High School’s homecoming football game on Sept. 9, 2022, according to NBC affiliate KXAS-TV. The incident resulted in Reid sustaining a traumatic brain injury, according to CBS affiliate KYTX and ABC affiliate KLTV.

Reid returned to the field at the school’s 2023 homecoming game on Friday, and he was later crowned homecoming king in front of his peers. Susanne Reid, Cooper’s mother, felt “blessed” to be on the field with her son as the community celebrated him, per KYTX.

In an interview with local NBC and Fox affiliate KETK, she added that the community’s support over the last year has been continually “amazing.” She continued, ”We are very fortunate to be a part of the community who stands by their people and loves one another and are faithful and kind.”

“It’s the messages, the text messages, the phone calls, the food, it’s all that’s happened that keeps encouraging us. It gives us hope,” she added. “We’re just very thankful, blessed.”

Cooper stayed at numerous hospitals in the past year following the incident on the field. He has also undergone an immense amount of physical therapy as he works on recovering, per KYTX.

“We will continue just to keep working day in and day out and, and keeping our focus on what’s ahead instead of what’s behind us,” Susanne said.

KETK also reported that Cooper is now enrolled back in school, and his family hopes he will be able to graduate with his classmates.
