Update from Blue Mountain Brewery

I can’t get over the Blue Mountain Brewery. The Irish stout is ready, and they’ve created a Half-Nelson that I like even more than the Full Nelson, which I love.

I was lucky enough to go when they were out of my standby parsnip soup (white truffle oil drizzle, mind you). I was offered a red bean soup and a ham soup, and I chose the latter. With the saltiness of the ham and spice from fresh cracked black pepper (and a couple of almost whole peppercorns!), the flavor was alarmingly good. Potato was well blended in for a starchy but creamy texture. And that bread– it’s always lightly grilled, and in that time, it picks up the aromas of the pizzas likely being cooked next to it.

It is a 20 minute drive from downtown Charlottesville. I’ve said it once but I’ll say it again! Take 64 west to exit 107, turn left on 250 west, then left on 151 south. It’s about a mile down 151 on your left. Closed Monday and Tuesday, and beers and wines are cheaper on Wednesday. Check it out Thursday for a very discount sandwich special, and yes, it will be open on St. Paddy’s.

Their stout on tap at South Street gives me a raging headache the next day. Delicious, but not quite worth it.

Didn’t someone — I can’t quite remember who — reveal the kitchen confidential that truffle oil is pretty much bogus?

lilith is spot-on highlighting their food here. The beer is good and can be had at many a local establishment (off the top of my head, Beer Run and Rapture have recently had Blue Mountain beers on-tap). The food alone, however, is quite, quite worth the drive. The avocado sandwich? To. Die. For.

40 oz– I just said it’s not real! It’s still called truffle oil and I still love it. I have taken to mixing it into common household condiments when I cook.

Their veggie pizza…WOW! Paired with a nice ale is one of my favorites around here. If only it were a bit closer. Calling Wahooptie to pick me up after tasting a few too many is really starting to dent my bank account. Any chance they will start a Blue Mountain shuttle?

I know, Jeff! Every single time I’m there, I get the “Want another?” and I reply with a pouty, “Nooo…” At least they sell their sampler size for $1/per individual, so I can get one more favorite.

Also, to confirm, yes, it is packed always. I haven’t had the avocado sandwich yet, thank you Stanley! What is so exceptional about it? What is the avocado-to-other-fillings ratio? And is it served hot or cold?

  14. 03 Mar 2008 at 4:14 pmStanley said:

The avocado sandwich is served cold; its filling consists of roughly 20% avocado, the rest being occupied by other delicious veggies, some moderately spicy hummus, and some cheese. The real sell, though, is the bread. It’s on this amazingly fresh white roll/bun thing. I almost drove out there Sunday just for that sandwich. It’s that good. HOLY CRAP I WANT ONE RIGHT NOW.

I still need to get back for more Dry Irish Stout and Bratwurst Pizza, quite possibly the best way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday, especially when the weather allows for patio seating. The only drawback is not being able to take home growlers of the stout. Something to do with the nitrogen draught system.

Maybe a link to this thread will make it onto their “Blue Mountain News”? Still haven’t been, but am dying to get there…

To clarify 14, apparently that sandwich is served “warm” according to the menu. Regardless: tasty.

Went by Blue Mountain yesterday. (3/15/) Place was packed. Great. When we left we made a left turn and headed towards Wintergreen. Stopped at a restaurant called dambolas. The food was awsome. Best Italian food I have had in this area. Great way to spend the day.
