Most Influential People in Charlottesville?

How many people do you really know in CVille?

Name three people, active within the community (social butterflies, philanthropists, entrepreneur…whatever), who you believe are the most influential, professional, and/or well-known and respected people that you know here.

Let’s see if there are any common denominators…

Forgive me for beginning with the obvious, but I’ve have to say Coran Capshaw, Larry Sabato of UVA, and why not Tim Reynolds for helping Dave start out. Although John Kluge would be one to recommend he has lost a lot of momentum since having to close several Bennigan’s and Steak & Ales (I think he actually lives away from Charlottesville most of the time now anyway).

@ 3 I can understand both sides of the Coran Capshaw agruement but he has done good things for the town, sometimes dispite “true Charlottesvillian’s” wishes; the Charlottesville Pavillion gets my vote. Also as far as a band manager he is a good guy, he’s done well for Dave and the gang and is even helping to reunite Phish on their what, 4th reunion. I know the director of the Hampton Coliseum and he speaks highly of Coran, which is not normal.

Leonard Sandridge would have to be up there, as the guy who actually runs things at U.Va. Tim Kaine is a big guy in any city in Virginia, as the head of the state government (which actually wields the power that allows things to get done in Virginia). And I’ll kick in Dave Norris, for his dual roles as a politician and homeless activist.

@39-40 Anyone who’s been in town long enough has stories about everyone else, including and especially the people you’ve mentioned. One thing I’ve appreciated about Cville is the fact that, knowing we all have stories about each other, we tend to keep that information to ourselves, as spilling can often turn around and bite you in the arse.

You are, of course, free to say whatever you like, but on this site, we’ve broached this line in the sand w/r/t the very personal dirt/gossip stuff and most have tended to shy away from the tell-all side of things. I would only say proceed with caution…

You’re all so damn funny and I’ve had a great time reading the posts and comments here - no question that cville bested you with the award - you’re all so beyond me, and, while I’d like to think I could swim in the deep end, it’s apparent that i can’t, so I’ll live with my dreams and shut up until I can think of anything remotely witty to say.

  71. 14 Aug 2008 at 1:28 ambackup planet said:

@68 - yes, you are certainly right. If I can take back what I said, I would. It won’t bite me in the arse, but having given the opportunity to spill it on film, I absolutely refused. In the meantime, now I don’t have my 15 minutes of fame, but that’s just fine with me.

$2 million? Hey, that works out to about a dollar for every timeout he called in the first 2 minutes of a half.

Slightly more on topic, I think there have been some good names listed, but many of the most influential people will always go unrecognized (either because they wish to remain anonymous or simply because they are doing their jobs). Teachers, doctors, sanitation workers, etc. who mean a lot to the community, but are just doing their jobs influence many people. I know… snore.

@95otterfurr, I object to numerous entries of yours, but not to Phil.

Pete Gillen is great. And he did walk into it. UVa is just too ass-stuck to be a welcoming place for athletes, in my most exuberantly humble opinion. Bunch of cr***er as*****s, or actually just one or two, can ruin whole semester methinks.

    Hmmm…. critter astroids?

I hate critter asteroids. It really only does take 2 to ruin a semester.

I think Dennis Rooker’s hair is very important. You guys ever seen that guys hair? It’s amazing. Truly a work of art and no one knows excpet Dennis and his barber what it really is and how many otters died to make it happen…

There are many people that run Charlottesville secretly from their offices in Stuarts Draft, Madison and Criglersville and Syria and Damascus, Virginia…

WTF does “influential” mean. I went 8 states away and no one knows this burg even exists. Apparently we have an imploding Real Estate market (there’s some news) and fear fear fear based lifestyle. Here’s a tiny clue. It’s called the orb and it’s cyclical. It goes round and round. What comes up must come down. Russia is invading someplace. Then they aren’t. The stocks fluff then they deflate. Spinning wheel….got to go round. What goes up must come down
spinning wheel got to go round Talking about your troubles it’s a crying sin

    Ride a painted pony
    Let the spinning wheel spin

You got no money, and you, you got no home
    Spinning wheel all alone.

The bigger question is what the hell is a painted pony. That’s what you should be worried about. Who is with me. If you aren’t with me..you’re against me and keep your friends close and all that.
Talking about your troubles and you never learn

Not to mention the “when robins attack” survivalist guide. Yeah…I’ve got my .22 here. That’s very scary and very David Duke of you…in a kind of white bread you obviously haven’t a clue kind of way. Psst. You can borrow my AR-15 when you’re cowering amongst your canned goods. Other than that…good post. Except I don’t follow rules and I’m not responding to that one. I’m going off topic and I’m nutty like that.

Um, okay, first I gotta apologize for trying to wear panties waaaay too small last night. Sorry, folks, will willingly surrender “panty license” and express dwp remorse to any and all who will listen. Secondly, I gotta convey that prolly 20 something years ago was advised by friend in uptown NYC that people “in the know” definitely know Cville. With all our good press, we should absolutely feel pretty good about our little burg. Shoulder pats, all around.
