Forgive me for beginning with the obvious, but I’ve have to say Coran Capshaw, Larry Sabato of UVA, and why not Tim Reynolds for helping Dave start out. Although John Kluge would be one to recommend he has lost a lot of momentum since having to close several Bennigan’s and Steak & Ales (I think he actually lives away from Charlottesville most of the time now anyway).

@ 3 I can understand both sides of the Coran Capshaw agruement but he has done good things for the town, sometimes dispite “true Charlottesvillian’s” wishes; the Charlottesville Pavillion gets my vote. Also as far as a band manager he is a good guy, he’s done well for Dave and the gang and is even helping to reunite Phish on their what, 4th reunion. I know the director of the Hampton Coliseum and he speaks highly of Coran, which is not normal.
CC does a lot for a lot of people and many times doesn’t ask or get press for everything he does. I’ve never understood why people hate on him, really, other than maybe envy.

Leonard Sandridge would have to be up there, as the guy who actually runs things at U.Va. Tim Kaine is a big guy in any city in Virginia, as the head of the state government (which actually wields the power that allows things to get done in Virginia). And I’ll kick in Dave Norris, for his dual roles as a politician and homeless activist.

@39-40 Anyone who’s been in town long enough has stories about everyone else, including and especially the people you’ve mentioned. One thing I’ve appreciated about Cville is the fact that, knowing we all have stories about each other, we tend to keep that information to ourselves, as spilling can often turn around and bite you in the arse.
You are, of course, free to say whatever you like, but on this site, we’ve broached this line in the sand w/r/t the very personal dirt/gossip stuff and most have tended to shy away from the tell-all side of things. I would only say proceed with caution…

Anyone give a shit that Pete Gillen still lives in cville? I’ve waited on him a few times downtown and he is a great and hilarius guy who is getting PAID to hang around cville and do whatever he damn well pleases. Might not have been the best bball coach, but pretty smart guy. I’d love to get fired for the small fee of $2 million.
$2 million? Hey, that works out to about a dollar for every timeout he called in the first 2 minutes of a half.
Slightly more on topic, I think there have been some good names listed, but many of the most influential people will always go unrecognized (either because they wish to remain anonymous or simply because they are doing their jobs). Teachers, doctors, sanitation workers, etc. who mean a lot to the community, but are just doing their jobs influence many people. I know… snore.
@96, yeah I think the $2M is accurate, but it pretty much killed his coaching career. He’s a funny guy who didn’t know how bad the situation he was getting into was. He’ll probably end up leaving town once his son graduates high school. No sense uprooting the family when he still travels all the time during the season anyway.
To add some more female names to the list: Suzanne Kogut, Executive Director of the SPCA, who’s done some kickass work for that shelter, and for local animal legislation.
If we’re going on favorites, not most influencial, my favorite person that works in cville is this young chinese woman that works at Sam’s Kitchen, named Jenny. She is awesome and always gives me the best service. In case you couldn’t tell before, Sam’s Kitchen is like my cville safe haven, go there whenever (best when hungover) and always get good coversation and a good meal. It’s prob the one place in cville I would be brave enough to go and eat alone at.
