Dave Matthews Band Saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, Has Passed Away

LeRoi Moore Dave Mathews Band

On June 30th, 2008, Dave Matthews Band’s saxophonist, LeRoi Moore got into an ATV accident that sent him to the University of Virginia hospital.  He had left the hospital, only to return a few days later. His condition was not good and word was that things weren’t going well.

We do not know the details, but have verified from two independent sources that this is in fact true.   I talked with Bruce Flohr, who confirmed his death several moments ago.

LeRoi, rest in peace and in your and Dave Matthews Band honor we won’t write anything on the site for tomorrow.  LeRoi died at the young age of 46.

More details available over at cvilleMUSE.

We are all going to kick it. the same amens…the same good luck to their families…so sick of this shit. This meaningless never ending bullshit of false hugs and hallmark cards. And no one really gives a shit. No thank you.. Just go fucking in the fields when I die and and it will be in a blaze. Don’t mourn for me. I’m not there. Yeah..sorry the dude died in such a stupid way at such a young age but it was his time apparently and he’s no different than Bill whoever who died at the same time in his life’s course and may have done as many great things but more quietly and without fans. Or really long bad jam band solos. Celebrity culture makes me ill. Sorry but I’m done being PC. Enough. A year of heartbreak and no more censor.

Just back from Dave’s show tonight…very sad stuff. He was so brave to go on…lots of ballads and tributes to his ‘dear friend’ (as he put it) and founding member Le Roy. The energy in the staples center was heavy and thick, and Dave was very sincere and obviously deeply pained. Told a good story or two about his buddy. The line up was pretty melancholic, as one would expect; he got through two step with gusto to close the show and thanked the audience for being there with him to celebrate Le Roy and to share the ‘bad news’ and get through it together…we’ll see if he plays tomorrow. Rumor has it that he has already cancelled Chula Vista and Arizona. Strange and profound show. My hats off to the band for playing to their fans and honoring Le Roy. Peace.

Back when the accident first happened, I believe I read (here?) that he checked out of UVa AMA. He returned to the hospital a week or two later. All of this can probably be found on various Cville new sites. I don’t have an answer to your question, though.

Did they have anyone replace LeRoi on sax last night?

He hasn’t played with them since the accident in June. Jeff Coffin, an amazing sax player from The Flecktones, has been playing with them since.

This is a site about the Charlottesville community, of which Roi was a significant member. Personally, he was a part of the lives of at least several regulars (that I know of) on this site (including me), and the shock of this makes even the smallest, most pointless gesture meaningful, at least imo.

If you can’t understand it, at least appreciate it for the rest of us. If you find the gesture itself small and pointless, then it should be just as small a sacrifice to not have new posts for one day. It’s not a celebrity thing. It’s a community thing.

I did it, and obviously you cannot - if I’m not mistaken, if you’re not asked to not post/comment for 24 hours, i.e., “today”, can you not help yourself? I guess not…

    LeRoi Moore, our fallen friend…
Sunday, May 14th, 2003…”Congratulations, Congratulations, Congratulations,” he said over and over again to me (without letting me interrupt him) , the day after Morwenna and I graduated from Berklee College of Music. With a blocked number calling my phone, I was hesitant to answer, but I had a feeling it was a call I should pick up. Hearing how big his smile was and his pride for my accomplishment was unreal. A musician I had grown up listening to since I was 12 years old, had called me to congratulate me on graduating music school. He kept saying to me that I did something that he only dreamed of and that I was on a great track.

Ever since I first met him, he always said I had incredible energy and a drive that was unlike anyone else. Since then he always acted as a mentor to me, listening to new ideas & songs, inviting me to meet people in the music industry, and encouraging me to never stop writing & playing. He was a very intelligent, hilarious, and humble person. He got me my first professional gig playing a DMB side-stage show in Mansfield, MA and he said my music was “too beautiful.” I think he was “too beautiful” and he will be missed dearly. I can’t imagine what people closer are feeling, but I am heartbroken and crushed, like so many…

If you ever have seen me write “stay on the positive tip,” It is a quote that LeRoi wrote to me (when I was a kid in middle school) on a flyer of theirs when DMB released their first major CD. I truly believe that it is necessary for all of us to get through any hard situations with positivity, so let us do just that. Be who you are, love what you do, love the ones around you and don’t take anyone or anything for granted.

with love, guidance, and the utmost sincerity,
    Stay on the positive tip…

From Dave Matthews Band official site:

    08/20/2008

We would like to take a moment at this sad time to thank everyone for the outpouring of condolences and notes celebrating LeRoi’s life. Thank you for the many inquiries we have received about making a gift in LeRoi’s name. A fund has been created in honor of LeRoi Moore in support of charities that reflect both his spirit and passion. Donations via check referencing the “Charlottesville Area Community Foundation for the LeRoi Moore Memorial Fund”…

cacfonline.org — you can donate online, but you have to describe exactly which fund you want your money to go to or it’ll go into their general fund. Stop in with a check at their downtown office: it’s at 114 4th St SE between Water Street & the mall. They have $70 million in assets. Bamaworks (DMB’s charitable arm) has had their money their forever. Lots of local charities large and small have their funds with CACF. It’s a great place to browse for a local endeavor to support.

i truely am one of dmb biggest fan and supporters of their music and Roi was just as much of the band as dave was.especially in concerts, when Roi would have his solo’s…wow!!!!!!! then dave and the boys would jump back in there and DAMN!!!! it was a total awesome show to see. one of Roi best intros is”lets be loves” just one of the many.its a shame people will never hear the oringinal 5 band members at their finest hour! whats even more sad is with the passing of this great muscian,it probable will make the band more popular with other people that never really listen to the band whole heartly.they will want to know ,”why is this one man,a single muscian getting all this love and why is this band getting all of this support.”well once they go to a dmb concert and see and hear the sounds that come from those guys you will understand the whole DMB jimmy thing!!!!
Rio ,man you will be very hard to replace and i will miss you up there on stage ,kinda off to the side just waiting to light that stage up with your awesome timing and sound, babe!!!!!!! you made ever concert perfect with your own sound…..you truely will be missed!!!!!!!!!!! peace always

Jay I think your sentiments are the best. ‘92-’99 I worked/helped with/for LeRoi, in cappyland, and I was crushed to hear the news… today,.. Oh boy. Those who knew Roi and knew him well were deeply concerned when he checked himself out early. When I read he had been readmitted shortly there after I got very worried. Then no news for weeks… wow this is bad. For some reason I was not shocked that he was in LA. Rather disappear than be hounded to behave and get well. Damn the wife and I loved that hard headed sweet sweet man. I hope he’s showing Charlie Parker some hot twisted licks on those tin whistles Dave got him in So. Africa. Always in my heart……

truly, our hometown boy (even if he was born in carolina…), was taken too soon. Whenever those we love are no longer there, we mourn. I’ve seen too many talented people be taken too, too soon. Love to you, all. For those of us who remain, shall we only aspire to such talents, passion and mourning upon our own passing.

I haven’t given it a great deal of thought since I didn’t know the man, but it dawned on me this morning as I was walking and watching the sun rise just how profound an effect the death of Leroi Moore as had on many close to me. Even though I’m one or two degrees of separation removed, perhaps his passing warrants a post.

For those of us lucky enough to be in our late teens to mid-20s in the early ’90s when DMB was taking off it was a magical time. Like me, most of us were blithely unaware of how great it was, but in retrospect it was after the Cold War and Reagan, the Berlin Wall had fallen and Iraq I was a rapidly fading memory. Gas was like a buck a gallon.

If you were in Charlottesville, Lexington, or Amherst (you know who you are) there was this new band playing for practically nothing (we had them on the back deck of my fraternity house in the Spring of ’92 for $1,000!) that seemed special. For $5 on Tuesday night, you could go to Trax and listen, and, if you were fortunate enough and only 20 years-old maybe enjoy a furtive beer or two in the parking lot during set breaks and even a sticky fumbling in the backseat of a car with a lovely girl carried away by the music.

1992 to like 1995. Before Monica and Bush II. Before 9/11 and $4 gas. What an awesome time to be a middle class kid in Virginia!

However small a role he played in all this, LM was an integral part of a band that brought great joy to millions – some of them close friends of mine. There’s not much more I can say other than that the sense of loss on the downtown mall last night in Charlottesville was palpable. And I didn’t even go near Miller’s out of a sense of knowing what I’d find there.

    Leroi Moore. RIP.
