David Tennant Tinkers With A Dalek In New Doctor Who Images As Pre-Specials Return Revealed

David Tennant toys around with a classic Doctor Who villain, the Daleks, in a brand new Doctor Who first look scene that releases before the specials.

David Tennant works with a Dalek in a glimpse into a new Doctor Who scene. Over a decade after finishing his main tenure as the Tenth Doctor, Tennant returns to the series as the Fourteenth Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials. The Doctor Who specials are slated for release on November 25, as a precursor to the release of Doctor Who season 14 in 2024.

Released by the BBC, a new image from Doctor Who shows Tennant’s Doctor toying around with a classic machine villain: the Daleks. This image stems from the upcoming Doctor Who pre-special release for BBC Children in Need. A fundraiser for Children in Need, the BBC Children in Need Doctor Who special will give viewers a taste of an exclusive scene. This special will air on November 17, prior to the release of the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials proper. The first look images also included a glimpse at Tennant’s co-star Mawaan Rizwan in the special. Check out the images below:

Taking to Instagram, showrunner Russell T. Davies also posted the image alongside commentary about this Doctor Who exclusive. In his post, Davies clarified that this is “NOT a comedy skit” but rather “a fully scored and FX’d five-minute scene.” Davies also encouraged viewers to “please contribute to the most wonderful cause” of BBC Children in Need.

The Return Of The Daleks Will Fit Well With The Doctor Who Specials

While the Doctor Who images do not reveal significantly more of the specials’ plots, they do seem to confirm the return of the Daleks. The Daleks are a staple Doctor Who villain, first appearing in the 1963 version of the series. Over time, the Daleks have gone through various iterations, including at the end of Tennant’s original seasons on Doctor Who.

By having Tennant fight with the Daleks again, Doctor Who is bringing back a familiar obstacle to its audiences. This reintroduction is unsurprising considering other choices the Doctor Who showrunner and writers are making for the Doctor Who specials. Not only are they playing on nostalgia by bringing back the beloved Tennant, but they are also bringing him back in fairly similar form, donning a similar outfit replete with his classic Converse and wielding his Sonic Screwdriver.

It is unclear exactly how Tennant will interact with the Daleks throughout the Doctor Who specials, but the image from the BBC Children in Need special shows him tinkering around with the Dalek in some way. This means that the special Doctor Who scene will likely see Tennant discovering something new or mysterious about the Daleks in some way. Viewers will then get the chance to see how this Dalek interacts in the fuller scope of the Doctor Who specials when they begin their run on November 25.
