When her grandchildren lost their parents, Paula started working as a cleaner, which was complicated due to her wheelchair. But she persevered, hoping that things would eventually get better, and never expected the strange bag of money that changed her life.

“I don’t know,” the janitorial manager of the office building shook his head at Paula. “This is a difficult job. I don’t think you’ll be able to do it.”

“Mrs. Alexander, please give me a chance,” Paula begged. “I know hiring someone my age and in a wheelchair must seem insane, but please. I need something more stable.”

“Wouldn’t it be easier to clean some houses?” the man said carefully.

“Yes, sir. But I need a more stable job with benefits, or my grandkids will be taken away at some shelter,” she continued desperately. “Look. I know everyone is struggling. But I swear I’ll be the best worker in the world.”

“Your pension and disability benefits are not enough?”

“No, sir. I have three grandkids. I need more money to show the state that I can care for them,” Paula begged one final time, feeling defeated as Mr. Alexander shook his head.

“Alright,” he said unexpectedly. “I can’t promise anything, but I’ll give you a chance.”

“Thank you! You won’t regret it!” the older woman cheered with happy tears in her eyes.

Paula started working as part of the janitorial staff at a big office building. As Mr. Alexander said, the job was difficult, and some of her coworkers worried about having to take on extra work to make up for what she couldn’t do, but the older woman proved them all wrong.

She was efficient, almost better than those who could walk perfectly. She was always on time, made no excuses, and learned from her mistakes. Her teenage granddaughter helped with her siblings, and together, they proved to the state that Paula was their best guardian.

Once the threat of them being taken away was gone, things started settling. The kids and Paula were still dealing with losing their mother and father, but they were working through it. Their schools had counselors who had volunteered to watch over them.

All things considered, Paula did well. For years, she had lived on her pension and disability benefits, which were only enough for bills and a few necessities. Also, being at home with nothing to do made her feel worthless.

But her life brightened when her grandkids visited, and her daughter had been a fantastic mother. Their passing in a car accident was tragic, especially when it looked like the kids would be separated into different foster homes and shelters.

Paula knew she had to do something, and she did. Mr. Alexander praised her work ethic often, and she made friends with her colleagues. It was a good situation. Tiring but better than not being able to see her grandkids ever again.

It was getting close to the end of the business day, and Paula was already done with her responsibilities. She only had to take her equipment to the janitorial room, so she rolled herself and the equipment, wanting to be home soon to make the kids something good for dinner.

She placed everything in its proper place and looked around in case she had forgotten something. A misplaced trash bag was sitting in a corner. It wasn’t supposed to be there. The staff had to take their trash to the proper bins outside.

But Paula shook her head, smiling. “Someone forgot,” she commented as she approached the bag. Everyone on staff had issues, such as kids to pick up from school and sick family members. So this wasn’t uncommon, so she decided to take the trash out herself.

However, it was heavier than usual. The good thing about cleaning a mostly office building was that the trash was usually paper and light. But this bag would barely budge from the floor. “Jesus, what’s in here,” she wondered as her fingers untied the knot.

The bag technically contained paper, but it was insanely heavy because it wasn’t discarded documents, used paper napkins, and more. It was money. Big stacks of cash. Each one had to be around $10,000. It was the kind of money that could set a person up for life.

“What is this doing here? Why so much cash?” she asked the empty room, panicking a little. “And who put it here?”

An intrusive thought came to mind. If she took that money, she could quit her job, and her grandkids could be set for a long time. She estimated there was enough money to send them to college. They could have a better life.

But as soon as that thought came, it went away. Paula couldn’t take this money. First, it would be impossible to just roll home with it. She couldn’t even lift it properly. Second, this seemed… shady. Someone had put money in a dark trash bag and hid it in the janitorial closet of the building. It was more than a little suspicious.

So, she thought about going to Mr. Alexander. But what if he was involved in whatever this shady business was? Would she get fired for saying anything? Would it be better to ignore the bag and go home?

She tied the bag’s knot and rolled away, thinking of doing that and forgetting about it. But in her heart, Paula knew she couldn’t ignore this. She grabbed her simple phone and called the police.

To her surprise, the police came immediately. They were investigating some people, including a few executives working at that office building, for money laundering. The bag was exactly what they needed to move forward with the case. CCTV footage was eventually found, and they arrested the culprit, eventually.

Even more shocking, a TV channel asked her for an interview a few days later, as other news stations reported on the story. They asked her about her finding and her life, noting that it must be hard to work as a cleaner while using a wheelchair. Paula told them everything about her grandkids. She had nothing to hide.

Her story went viral, and online users started a fund for her family, as Paula’s sacrifice and hard-working ethics moved them. She saved the money and continued working in the office building until Mr. Alexander took another job, and she was promoted to the manager of the janitorial staff.
