Doctor Who Season 15 Release Window Revealed, Showrunner Teases “Brand New” Story

Doctor Who season 15 release window is revealed, as showrunner Russell T Davies teases a "brand new," elaborate story for the 2025 episode.

The release window for Doctor Who season 15 is revealed, as showrunner Russell T Davies teases a new, elaborate story unlike anything before for the in-development 2025 episode. Ncuti Gatwa’s second season is currently filming alongside 2024’s seasonal special despite having yet to debut as the Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa’s first full adventure, “The Church at Ruby Road,” will air in December 2023 and will feature the debut of his companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).

With Doctor Who‘s new 60th-anniversary stories set to air soon and usher in Davies’ second tenure as showrunner, the returning creative revealed to RadioTimes.com the progress of the show’s future, hinting at the expected release time for Gatwa’s second season. The showrunner stated that he had just submitted a script for season 15 that he expects to air in May 2025. He then explained how the writing process had been unlike anything he had tackled before, as Davies employed diagrams to explain the ambitious story. Check out Davies’ full explanation below:

“If I sound a bit hyper, it’s because I just this morning delivered a Doctor Who script that will be on air in May 2025.

And it’s brand new. It does things we’ve never done before. The writing really pushed me. It’s such a mad episode, I had to deliver it with a diagram explaining what’s going on! I’ve never had to do that in my entire life before.”

What We Know About Doctor Who Season 15

Doctor Who season 14 wrapped filming in July, but Davies revealed in June that he was already working on the following season, which is expected to be eight episodes. This was not long after 2024’s seasonal special also finished production. Gatwa, not long after, confirmed his reprisal as the Fifteenth Doctor for a second season during an interview. With the showrunner and actor set to return to create future adventures in space and time, filming on Doctor Who season 15 kicked off in October, beginning with the 2024 seasonal special, as Gatwa took part in night shoots involving collapsing Christmas decorations.

The Fifteenth Doctor will not only be joined by familiar faces by the time Gatwa’s second season airs but new guest cast members as well. Alongside Gibson returning to play new companion Ruby, Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan will join in the 2024 seasonal special, expecting to play a character swept up in the Doctor’s adventures during the holiday season. Season 15 will also see a celebrated creative member join the team behind the camera, as director Peter Hoar returns to Doctor Who for the first time since 2011 following his work on The Last of Us and It’s A Sin alongside Alex Pillai to direct the new season.

Despite Davies and Gatwa’s first episodes of their new Doctor Who era having yet to air, it has not slowed the work on the franchise’s future. Davies has already revealed an ambitious multi-year plan for the main show alone, indicating more Doctor Who for years to come. Furthermore, with a previously quickly redacted press release that season 14 would air in spring 2024, it seems Doctor Who could find a new home within the spring television season each year for the foreseeable future.
