Multiple Looks At New Doctor Who Era Revealed In 60th Anniversary Video

A number of glimpses at Ncuti Gatwa's new Doctor Who era have been revealed in a new video celebrating the series' history for its 60th-Anniversary

New footage of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s new companion Ruby Sunday has been revealed in a new video celebrating Doctor Who‘s 60th-anniversary milestone. An all-new era for the franchise kicks off with the three upcoming anniversary specials, as returning showrunner Russell T Davies reunites with David Tennant and Catherine Tate for all-new adventures that celebrate the franchise’s past. Gatwa and Gibson will then have their first adventure in 2023’s seasonal special, “The Church at Ruby Road”, in December, before leading the show in a new season set to air in 2024.

With November 23 marking sixty years since Doctor Who first aired in 1963, the official Doctor Who YouTube channel released a new retrospective video.

The video features narration by Eighth Doctor Paul McGann, detailing what makes the series unique over footage dating back to William Hartnell’s earliest adventures as the First Doctor to David Tennant’s shocking return as the Fourteenth Doctor in the three upcoming specials. The trailer also features new footage of Gatwa and Gibson from the 2023 seasonal special and 2024’s season 14, with both scenes showing both the next Doctor and companion stepping outside the TARDIS.

The next era of Doctor Who under Davies is already shaping up to be a promising chapter of the long-running sci-fi series despite his first, full-length adventures having yet to air. With a new distribution agreement with Disney that has seen the series secure a new international streaming home and additional funding, the series’ future beyond Gatwa’s full Doctor Who first season is already in development, as both a 2024 seasonal special and season 15 are currently filming. Both Gatwa and Gibson are confirmed to return to lead the eight-episode season, as all-star talent both in front and behind the camera joins the production of new adventures throughout space and time.

Gatwa’s future Doctor Who adventures aren’t the only way the franchise will grow in the coming years, as Davies is also set to help expand the brand further. November saw the debut of the new spin-off series Tales of the TARDISwith past Doctors and companions reuniting to look back on the show’s most pivotal adventures, while a number of other spin-offs are already rumored to be in the works. Alongside new adventures, old adventures will also be revitalized with new restorations, beginning with 1963’s “The Daleks”, and newly colorized footage of “The Dalek Invasion of Earth” and “Tomb of the Cybermen” featuring in the recent anniversary video.

Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary will not only celebrate the show’s past with familiar faces both good and bad returning to screens, but usher in the next era of the series. The 60th-anniversary specials will give audiences their best glimpse at Davies’ new vision of the series before Gatwa makes his debut in 2023’s seasonal special in December. While McGann’s narration highlights what has allowed Doctor Who to last for six decades, the new footage of Gatwa and Gibson offers a glimpse at an exciting next chapter.
