The Irish born star fast became an acclaimed actress on the back of Derry Girls and she also starred in period drama Bridgerton. In the Netflix drama, Nicola played Penelope Featherington, a reluctant debutante. Speculation of Nicola’s role in Doctor Who started to circulate last year but, at that time, the actress was keen to shut down rumours. After being spotted posing alongside new Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa at the BAFTA TV Awards on the day his role was publicly confirmed, Whovians started to speculate over her connection to the actor and suspected she should appear alongside the Time Lord.

Speaking to Variety magazine, she adamantly said: “I am not going to be on Doctor Who.” However, adding a deflection from Doctor Who questions, she added: “We are doing something together, but it’s not Doctor Who.” Production appears to be moving fairly quickly as the majority of filming wrapped months ago. Following a brief break during summer, the production team were back filming in Cardiff.

Last month the Doctor Who cast and crew were seen filming in a number of different locations across the Welsh capital, including Cardiff University. Another location was at Mansion House and Ncuti was spotted on set. Ncuti’s role as the Time Lord sees him in a number of eye catching outfits. The actor was spotted wearing a yellow polo shirt, brown trousers and white trainers. Meanwhile, his stunt double was pictured wearing the same leather coat Ncuti had been seen wearing in promotional images.

And as pictures emerged from filming, fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter to pen their excitement. One person wrote: “Loving the colour palette he never misses in these outfits. Another added: “I must say that every single costume that Ncuti wears just never misses. Kinda iconic really.” And a third said: “THE WAY I WAS STOOD WAITING FOR AN HOUR AND THEN 10 MINUTES AFTER I LEAVE HE COMES OUT.”

Last month, it was revealed Barbie actor Ryan Gosling may also star in Doctor Who after expressing his love for the sci-fi show to his co-star Ncuti. Ryan named the programme as the “coolest show in the world”. In a recent interview the latest Doctor Who star recalled: “I remember Ryan Gosling bounding up to my trailer [on Barbie] like, ‘Doctor Who is the coolest show in the world man!”

A source told The Sun: “This would be a huge coup for the show, but also a real honour for Ryan who is something of a Whovian. It’s not clear yet what role he’d have, but the writers would tailor a character for him to play, if he could find the time in his packed schedule.” Ncuti auditioned for the role of Doctor Who back in February 2022, under the impression he had zero chance of landing the part. He said: “I was just like, ‘there’s no way I’ll get this it’s a British institution and there’s no way they’ll cast a black man.'”
