Upcoming Doctor Who star Doctor Ncuti Gatwa reacts to his surprising heartwarming cameo beside David Bradley’s William Hartnell in a 60th-anniversary re-edit of the behind-the-scenes drama An Adventure in Space and Time. The actor will take on the role of the Time Lord following David Tennant’s 60th-anniversary special return, with Gatwa expected to make his main series debut in the third special, “The Giggle.” Gatwa’s first full adventure, “The Church on Ruby Road”, will be Doctor Who‘s 2023 seasonal special, releasing on December 25 before the actor leads the show in his first season in 2024.

As audiences were treated to Gatwa’s surprise An Adventure In Space and Time cameo during a BBC Four rebroadcast of the 2013 50th-anniversary making-of drama, Gatwa himself has shared his own reaction to the moment he shared the screen with Bradley’s Hartnell on his Instagram account.

While Doctor Who‘s first 60th anniversary special would not air on the date the show first debuted in 1963, the BBC nevertheless set out to ensure that the date would see new Doctor Who reaches audiences to mark the occasion. Alongside video on social media, Gatwa’s appearance in the rebroadcast of An Adventure in Space and Time, the BBC also released a colorization of the earliest available story, “The Daleks.” With newly restored footage, additional scenes, and a new score, “The Daleks in Color” gave a new way to see the First Doctor’s first meeting with the Daleks.

However, Gatwa’s An Adventure in Space and Time appearance not only surprised viewers, but perfectly encapsulated the meaning around the drama’s original scene in 2013. In the original cut of the drama, Hartnell sees a vision of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor whilst filming his final scenes ahead of his Doctor Who departure, ensuring him that the show’s legacy would go on and be in safe hands despite being heartbroken about departing the role. With Gatwa being incorporated into Smith’s place, the 2023 update to An Adventure in Space and Time remained faithful to the scene’s original message, as the Doctor’s adventures in space and time continue to leave audiences thrilled to this day.

Though viewers were left surprised by Gatwa’s surprising Doctor Who debut in the re-edited An Adventure in Space and Time, the Fifteenth Doctor’s appearance allowed audiences to bring the show’s 60th anniversary to a perfect close. The actor has been open in discussing how much the Doctor has meant to him, and how he has incorporated his own experiences into his portrayal. While audiences eagerly await Gatwa’s upcoming adventures in 2024, the actor’s reaction is a perfect way to mark the show’s lasting impact.
