As General Hospital’s Kelly Monaco Celebrates Her 20th Anniversary, Sam Is Headed For the Heartbreak of Her Life

Two decades is one heck of an accomplishment — especially in daytime. Sure, there are a good number of longterm characters who stick around for years, but there’s also a whole slew of characters who are introduced, only to fizzle out or fade into the background and never be seen again.
Luckily, when Kelly Monaco made her General Hospital debut as con artist Sam McCall on October 1, 2003, she did not fade away. If anything, her star just kept growing brighter! It didn’t take long for her to get mixed up with Port Charles’ favorite mobster, find a mom in Alexis and an entire Davis family and begin the romance of her life with Jason.
Part of that, of course, is the fact that they both lost their great loves. Jason’s dead again and Lulu’s in a coma, so for Sam and Dante, this is their chance at a second great love. And what’s even more exciting is how well they don’t just work together as romantic partners, but heroic ones as well, teaming up with Cody to help Sasha and bring her tormentors to justice. How can you not love a happy couple that works this well together?

If only it could last. Because as happy and perfect as Sam and Dante are together, Lulu’s eventual return is all but certain. After not even mentioning her for ages, all of a sudden, over the summer Dante paid her a visit after she’d been moved back to Port Charles and General Hospital! That’s a huge reveal, even if we didn’t get to see Lulu herself. And while Emme Rylan let us know back in August that she hadn’t yet heard from the show, she also made clear that if and when Lulu wakes up, she’d be ready to head back!
Like it or not, Sam’s got heartbreak headed her way. Sure, maybe Dante will stick it out with Sam when his former wife returns. After all, they hadn’t quite reconciled when she fell into her coma. But the draw of family can be a powerful thing. Even if he sticks it out with Sam, things are likely to get rough between them for a bit.
But no matter what happens, we’ve no doubt Monaco will knock it out of the park, just as she’s done with everything else Sam’s been handed in the last 20 years. And about the only thing we do know is we can’t wait to watch it all go down.
